Anyone use EZ Chek on brakes?

Just wondering if anyone was using EZ Chek on their brake pushrods to check adjustment? We run some low trailers and thought it might be nice to be able to quickly check adjustment. Anyone have any thoughts?

Help 2

This may sound like a stupid question, but what is it? Are you talking about the little plastic tabs that go on the rod?

I think he means the ones that bolt to one of the maxi studs and has a bracket two posts that stick up next to the clevis pin of the slack adjuster. The first post is the released position and the second is max allowable travel. The first two show a truck and trailer with brakes that are applied and within adjustment. The second pair show with the brakes out of adjustment.

Oh ok, I was thinking of these little plastic discs that clip onto the rod to measure adjustment. Unless I'm understanding it wrong, either of these systems still require two people, one to apply brakes and one to check it. That's useless to me, I can't be in two places at once.

I guess those would make it easier to do by just looking at them though...

I was talking about the little plastic snap on tabs...

I was talking about the little plastic tabs that snap on the push rods. They sell an accessory that clamps onto the steering wheel and pushes down the brake pedal. I guess if your wheels are already chocked with the brakes released this isn't a bad idea, no different than crawling under and checking slack otherwise. I have talked to our other drivers who agree it would make it easier for a DOT inspector to check slack, but if he is going to look, he is going to look, doesn't matter if they are on there or not. We figure that if nothing else, it shows a good faith effort in staying on top inspections. Thanks for everyones input. We are always looking for small ways to keep on top of things, keep our safety record clean, and keep the revenue in the company instead of in the DOT's pockets.

I've never seen the device that pushes the pedal, where do you find that? I think I tried the tabs once and they didn't fit my rods very well, so I never put them on.

I normally just adjust my slack adjusters every service. I can normally tell how they are by how much it takes to tighten. I leave the measurement to truck inspections since LS requires us do get one every 120days anyhow.

Those little round disc are not easiest to install. Easy to break in half. Make sure you soak them in hot water to soften them up a little.

Anyway, any piece of pipe or steel, prybar would work to wedge the brake pedal down. Either wedge it under the steering wheel, or the seat somehow.
