I need info on 2001 freightliner classic ...DOT inspections 48 states Califonia etc?

I found a beautiful 2001 FLD classic for sale..it has a Detroit series 60-12.7L, rebuilt 13 speed,
3.73 rear end, truck has 900k miles and a newer Carrier APU..excellent running and good oil change records every 12k miles...lots of good maintenance records too. If I can get it to last at least 2-3 years I figure it will be worth it.
I can get this truck real cheap but I'm wondering about the future of this truck as far as the DOT. I heard California requires special engine and emission. Will this truck be able to drive 48 states?
What will I have to do to it to pass all DOT inspections?..or will it be in the bone yard after 2013

Mediceman has the right answer. Just stay out of California and everything in your trucking life will be easier.....unless you live there.

If your small truck fleet (3 or less, I believe) you need to have a diesel exhaust particulate filter on the truck by Jan. 1, 2013 to enter California. I dont know if any of the other states are requiring this. Right now I think they are going from $5-6,000, however by 2013 the price will (hopefully) come down.

So far JasontheRock is the only one with the correct answer.

I have a 2001 Pete 379 with a C-15 & no emissions & no changes made for California. I have to the end of 2012 to continue running California. After that I will no longer be allowed into the state unless I retro fit my truck.

I understand your way of thinking. I'm going to be thinking the same way after 12/31/2012. But right now I'm playing by their rules & hauling the freight. I'm loading in the morning heading back to LA & already got a reload coming back into Texas!

if you read the wording of the CA legislation you will notice that upgrading to a DPF will not GAURANTEE you will be compliant. It's worded something like, it MAY bring you into compliance.
in short the only way to gaurantee is to buy a new truck. that's what all this is about anyways. Look to see how much money has been put behind this legislation from truck manufacturers

California has always said they are on the leading edge. My stomach would tighten up every time I went through their scales and I lived in Tracy. Got inspected once just W of Reno NV and passed because I told them before hand I had marginal drivers and had them ordered but they were at our terminal in MT. The lady supervisor must have liked me. I wonder if Pumpkin and JB can deliver all the strawberries ontime when everyone quits.

I reckon we are going to find out if they can. The big companies have tried several times to get into produce and every time its been a spectacular failure.
With produce you can't be relaying loads or having drivers shut down for a re set in the middle.

I believe where I am at there is almost nobody ca compliant. Besides they have pushed back the deadline twice already and I believe they will again. They're simply too broke to enforce it
