I graduated truck driving school and obtained my CDL at the end of June 2013, shortly after that I was contacted by US Xpress and I had an orientation scheduled for mid July. But right before it I got another job working with my brother in his mechanic shop ( no driving at all ) so I decided not to go to the orientation. I called my recruiter and told her I would not be attending, she said that's fine and to call her back if I ever changed my mind. Well a few weeks ago I was let go from that job because we just didn't have enough work and I was the one with the least amount of experience. The last night I received a kind of postcard thing in the mail from my recruiter at US Xpress saying I should give her a call. I saw on craigslist where they have a lot of ads where they have NE Regional openings and you supposedly get home every weekend ( I live in Maryland ).

I'm just wondering, after 6 months of never even stepping inside of a truck. how hard would it be for me to schedule an orientation and pass the road test for US Xpress? I still know all the little techniques about backing and turning and such, but without actually doing any of that for that long, I'm not sure if I could. I'm a quick learner, I mean hell when I started trucking school, I didn't know how to drive a stick. The first time I drove a stick was in the school's Mack 10 speed. I'm very tight on cash which is why I'm wondering if it'd be worth it to see how I would do after not driving for 6 months....

Would US Xpress even consider giving me a chance? I know they hire recent graduates but I'm pretty sure 6 months out of trucking school with no experience is not considered recent..

it would be worth contacting your school and see what they would charge for a day in the truck to refresh and assess yourself

Tell them the truth, They may have you stay with a trainer a little longer or maybe he can brush you up on the skills you learned in school, I would certainly get with them and see what they have available, If you go there be sure to stay at least a year, You will be considered a job hopper and those are not liked around this industry. I wish ya luck, I'd call her on Monday and get the ball rolling. Good luck.

There are several companies that will hire you other than USX. Shop around before making a decision. USX probably is going to team you.

My school doesn't offer no kind of " refresher course ". But besides, I wouldn't have the money for it anyways most likely.

Ok thanks. I most likely will call her on Monday to see what she says. I need to find something quick because apparently I didn't work enough last year to get unemployment ( I was unemployed from Jan-July ), so if I don't find something in the coming weeks, I'm afraid I'll probably be living in my car which is quite embarrassing especially considering I'm only 22.

I'm not sure what the age requirement for at Trans Am. I forgot to mention in my original post, but I'm only 22.

U Sit Express probably sent you that post card thinking you have been driving for the past 6 months. If they do accept you. You probably will have to do OTR training, and not be home every weekend until you get out of training.

Not many companies will hire you without a Refresher.
