I have my CDL license, but don't have much driving experience. I also have a unique situation.....I have dwarfism. I use pedal extenders to drive both my pickup truck, and semi trucks. I have driven both manual and automatic semi trucks. Here is my problem: I only have been able to find an accelerator pedal, and brake pedal, that are D.O.T. approved. I my pedal extenders to drive legally. My driving instructor recommended U.S. Xpress to me as he said they use automatics. Here are my questions:

1.) I heard through the grapevine that U.S. Xpress is getting away from autos? Is that true? Do they still use autos at all?

2.) I know as a new driver after orientation you go out with a trainer, then team up. After teaming up, can you go solo OTR/regional??

3.) Does US Xpress have forced NYC dispatch?

4.) I have been out of driving school for almost a year due to medical issues that are now resolved. Does this affect getting hired with little to no experience?

So far from what I've heard U.S. Xpress is a great company to work for. I am hoping to get some answers to my questions and then hopefully get on the road!

Any and all info/answers would be very much appreciated! Thank you.

These are all the questions to ask a recruiter or someone at the co. you want to work at, only they can tell u for sure. Just pick up the phone. I've always heard too that they are a decent company and have plenty of freight. I think most companies are OK, it's just if guys can be patient, want to work, and get their time in.

Also, back when I started, I ran wherever it would give me miles. If a co. kept me busy as I wanted to be, I was happy. Back when fuel was $1/gal. I ran NY/east coast a LOT. Not the big deal so many worry about, other than the potholes. Do I run there now, no, but I still consider it. The question is: can I get decent/any freight out of there. Which the answer is usually no, or I have to deadh. a long way out of there. So the headhaul must pay good enuff to do it. Good luck.

    1. They did get rid of automatics a few years ago but they've been buying automatic Cascadias for those that need it.

    2. You can go solo OTR/Regional

    3. No forced dispatch to NYC unless on a dedicated account

    4. Your medical problems might be an issue. Trucking companies are weird like that. What was the problem ?

BigRig, I wish you all the best. We're here to help if you have anymore questions.

Being out of school a whole year with no experience might be a problem. A quick phone call should answer that.
