I'm thinking of changing careers. I'm 43 year old male and am considering teaming with USXpress. Through my research it seems to be one of the best companies for teaming, at least of the starter companies. I have a few questions. Thanks for any help that can be provided.

    (1) According to the website, teams start out at .48 cpm if have haz-mat endorsement. I plan to get that. Is this accurate and if so what is a realistic number of weekly miles that I could expect to get? I have also seen a couple of posts where someone said something about .70 cpm. Are the rates different depending on the account you get?

    (2) I have my CDL-A but I have no experience. It has been a little over 2 years since I drove. First of all, would USXpress hire me without a refresher course as I really cannot afford one at this point? Secondly, does anyone have any idea how much training I would have to go through before getting out on my own (with my teammate).

    (3) I don't have a teammate already and was wondering how USXpress goes about matching people up. I'd really like a male non-smoker and hopefully someone I can get along with well.

    (4) The USXpress website indicated that home time would be every other weekend. Is this accurate? I think I could live with being home 2 days out of every 12 but much more than that might be difficult. If I were home this often would my miles be able to stay up fairly close to an average of 5,000 per week?, understanding that maybe on the week where I am working 7 days a week it hopefully would be closer to 6,000 and on the short week maybe closer to 4,000.

    (5) Any other companies you would consider good for me to team with?

Thanks for everyone's help and input!

    -Daniel

I am going to address a couple of these. .48 is accurate and you can expect 5,000 to 6,500 miles a week. There is no way you can go home every two weeks and make money as a company driver unless you are on a dedicated account. In some areas, they do put new drivers on dedicated so check with a recruiter.
I do not believe the insurance company will let USX hire you without a refresher course but again, ask a recruiter.

Oh, and they will match you up with a non-smoking, male teammate.

Thank you Craig/Anne. I've enjoyed what I have read so far in your blog. Appreciate the input. Sounds like a dedicated route might be the way to go. Is this something that a Newbie could expect to be able to get and if so do you or anyone else have any recommendations about a good dedicated account for someone living in Western North Carolina driving teams that gives a good, consistent mileage of atleast 5,000 miles per week and home time of a couple of days every other week? Might be a pipe dream I know but one can hope. Thanks!

What account will get you home every other weekend ? Typically they want you out 3-4 weeks with 3-4 days off a month. They have a few accounts that get you home sooner but those for the most part are Dollar General, Family Dollar, etc. Those are solo accounts.

What ad was it for teams that got you home every other weekend ? The Town Air Freight ?

They match people by zip code. Try to find someone that is in your region.

They may take you since you haven't driven in a while. Last I heard....training was 150 hours.

Expect anywhere from 4,000 to 6,000 miles a week.

Thanks Truckduo. The Ad I saw which wasn't really an Ad, but I saw it on USXpress website. It was under the job opening for a team driver position. It was the same place where it said that the pay was .48 cpm. Not sure this is gonna work out for me if I have to be out that much before coming back home. Thanks to everyone for their input. I'll keep searching.

The Towns Air Freight claims to get you home every other week but more than likely just long enough to do a reset. We turned it down because it has to get there on time or the product will miss it's flight. Plus, they told me we would mainly be going to Seattle & San Diego. The miles are good though. Requires HazMat.
