You can make that same argument against taking a food service or ltl job as well. Yet those jobs are praised on here...by yourself even. How many times have you recommended old dominion and other ltl carriers to people on here?

I'd stay away from OTR personally. It's just not a life if we are being completely honest. Family Dollar deal sounds lousy as well but I would take that over being OTR.

    Big Blue and TruckDuo,
Thank You for all of your in-put on this subject. You have shed some light on a sometimes very convoluted and confusing situation. I for one do not intend to physically un-load a 53' Trailer for $220 above the per mile pay. I will leave that up to the dock workers at the Shipper/Receiver. I will gladly go OTR over a Dollar account any day!
    Thanks again.

BigBluePeter, TruckDuo and yahshuah Thank this.

I don't praise either one; depending on how the OP's poses a question, that may be the best option. I've done food service and it was horrible, but the money was good. LTL is good for some, but I'd never do it. Just depends on the best fit for a situation. The only reason I did food service at all is because I needed better home time for awhile, but not for long. I've done a few of those K-Mart floor loads and Dollar loads when picking up some slack for other companies and it's not something to do every day for a living. Old Dominion is a good company & the drivers I'm familiar with do drop & hook. If an Old Dominion driver wants to be home every day, then sure, he has manual labor doing those short or city P&D's. Still much better than those Dollar accounts, in my opinion!

    TruckDuo Thanks this.

Lets be honest here. If truck driving in general was something everyone wanted to do they wouldn't have been hiring the entire length of this recession.

I just got Myself taken off that Dollar Store Dedicated! Now I am breathing a little easier because I go to orientation on Monday knowing that I will run solo OTR east of I35. That is as soon as I finish up my little "shake the rust off" training gig with them. I expected to be with a trainer since it's been 2yrs since I ran OTR. All of that aside...I'm happier now that I got that dollar account business off of my back!
    Be safe Folks!
