Payroll Deduction Authorization?

    So... I'm starting orientation in Springfield on Monday, 11/17/2014. Got an email with some docs they want me to review & agree to and one of them is a Payroll Deduction Authorization. As this is my first trucking job for a newbie fresh out of school, my question is: Is it normal to have to agree to payroll deductions for traffic tickets, tow bills, overweight fines, truck repair charges (collision damage), Fuel policy violations? Not that I anticipate any of this being an issue, but I'm new!

    Anybody with experience from other carriers have to sign similar agreements? Ever had a company (including USX) come after you for things like this?

    A good company will only have you authorize your state,federal and SS being deducted,,health , and a contribution to your 401 is about the only other,,I would not agree to any other deduction,, you can agree to anything but deductions for fuel policy violations,,towing and other stuff is BS AND DRIVER ABUSE,,NOT A GOOD COMPANY

    Seeing as it is in the US EXPRESS forum page, I doubt it is Prime.

    Not Prime. This is for US Xpress. I am a bit shocked that they would ask to deduct what I would consider to be normal operating expenses from my paycheck. I would expect to be fired if I caused too many expenses to the company, but I would not expect to have to pay an employer back for those expenses.

    How are traffic fines, tow bills (maybe from getting stuck going where not supposed to?), collision damage, over weight fines and fuel policy violations, normal operating expenses? They are not. Who is going to repay the company for these expenses that were incurred with YOU behind the wheel? If you are not at fault then you won't get charged for anything.

    It is your responsibility to follow the laws, to scale the load and make sure not overweight before proceeding. Back into a another truck, or take out fence or pole, should be charged because those are things in your control. Car sideswipes you, another truck backs into you etc... No charge for you as it was out of your control. Maybe knowing that you can and should be charged with such things will help you to pay better attention to what you are doing while behind the wheel.

    They are normal operating expenses just as broken dishes, employees providing over-sized portions, or dropping food on the floor (then hopefully throwing in the trash) are normal operating expenses in a restaurant. Accidents happen. As I stated, I don't intend for any of it to be an issue but it does alarm me that an employer may try to bill me for something that should just be a cost of operations. Makes me wonder... If I get injured on the job, are they gonna bill me for that too?

    If a person needs monetary motivation (threat of payroll deduction) to do his or her job properly, then they shouldn't be doing the job to begin with. So again, I come back to that person should lose their job if they become a liability but the expense is still on the company as long as they are an employee.

    I'm very likely still going to orientation and doing so with a positive attitude. I have done a ton of research on many companies over the past several months and I believe USX best fits what I'm looking for (as far as the megas go). I was just curious if this payroll deduction auth was the norm.

    My wife and I have been at US Xpress for almost two years and I can tell you from experience you have nothing to worry about. We've go out of route on a regular basis and never get charged. Drivers I know have damaged their trucks, other peoples property, had to have a tow truck come out, etc. and the company never charged them.

    A team I know recently quit USX without giving them a heads up(long story) so they were charged for the fuel(about $100). Another guy on here got charged for fuel for picking up a trailer and not checking if it was loaded or not. Your supposed to before you put the seal on it. He gets to the reciever and realizes he took the wrong trailer. The company wanted him to pay for the fuel for screwing that up and offered to let him pay it back in installments but he quit rather than being a man about it. This kind of stuff doesn't happen if your a professional driver.

    Overweight fines and other tickets are on you.
