first things first, lets clarify this first...are you inquiring about a "DOT" physical or a "Orientation" physical? because they are two different things, and it looks like some of the responses to your question are thinking DOT... also, to help you further, do you have a CDL permit or License already? if you don't have your DOT physical and medical card already i would worry about that physical more than the orientation physical..

for my DOT physical, i only had the following things done to get my medical card: weight/height check, sugar levels tested [through piss in a cup], blood pressure, vision test, reflex test, checked my breathing, and a hernia check...also, there is a questionaire within the documents you have to fill out prior to seeing the doctor which will inquire about other medical issues which may dictate how the rest of your physical may go...but im a young-athletic ex-military male in his twenties that exercises 4 times a week, so my physical was a breeze

orientation physicals won't give you a DOT medical card, they are just additional physicals done through the company which usually test your physical abilities, and could also include another drug test as well...these physical capability tests can and usually include some of the tests you are worried about...or with some companies you wont have them at all..but if the company does have orientation physicals, you can bet your pay check it will be stairs, wall sits/sqauting, lifting, etc etc etc..

now as far as contacting the recruiter, its never to early to contact a recruiter...you can get the ball rolling right now, so when you are ready you will have fewer things to do..they keep your information on file for a long time..and if you are contacting about information, there is no harm in doing that at all at anytime...the reason i suggest contacting the recruiter, is because you don't have to commit at all when you are only gathering research and information...plus, they can give you the actual hard evidence as to what to expect for their school, orientation, mentorship, and company..just call them up, and say im inquiring about the orientation physical for your company and what it entails...they will answer your question, and say thank you then hang up..don't be afraid to call and ask, you may find out there is more you need to train on before going...or you may find out you are worrying about more things than you need to be

    ....and

im sorry for your loss, unfortunately i know how that is all to well...

I have been referring actually to the USA Truck orientation physical and not the DOT physical. I have several issues however that I am concerned about with both physicals actually. My hearing is damaged. I recently had an audiometric test done with the VA, and my hearing loss is problematic in the mid to upper frequencies. I might be able to pass a forced whisper test, but I might not either. I have hearing aids on order, and on Aug 5th I have another appointment with the VA to have then fitted and tuned. For this reason I don't have my CDL-A permit yet. I hope this will alleviate that problem with the DOT and USA Truck or other potential employer. My BP is borderline with my meds, hovering around 85-90 on the bottom number, but I think with exercise and the diet I am doing, I can get that to the point I won't worry about it passing the physicals. I'm not on any other med other than Zocor for cholesterol, and that along with my blood sugar has been good.

I am also worried about my work history. I have had only four jobs since 1983 and have never been fired, always receiving excellent evals. However, I quit my third job after 9 years in good standing two years ago to take care of my elderly mother who suffered from some dementia and required my assistance for her day to day needs. She recently passed away, and this is why I am now wanting a new career. A couple of months ago, for the fourth job since 83 I went to work for a electric parts company that I disliked and quit after less than two weeks after a disagreement with the manager over a training issue. Hopefully that will not bite me in the behind with USA Truck. I have no criminal record at all. I don't use drugs or alchohol. I have a clean driving record for the last decade, except for a seat belt violation about six years ago, and the funny thing is I normally wear my seat belt and am very safety conscious. I can't remember when my last speeding violation was, having been well over ten years ago. I am divorced and have no family and little debt to worry about. I don't even own a home. I love to travel, and I love driving, especially on the open road. I know a driving job OTR will be one I will most likely love, even with the BS that accompanies it. Hopefully, my good qualities will outweigh any negatives with potential trucking company employers.

It's pretty simple. Just a general physical. But you have to understand the job does require you to do some physical activity that many new drivers don't think about. Can you push a broom to sweep out the trailer? Can you climb into the trailer, or the top bunk during training?Pull nails out of a hard wood floor? Open the hood occasionally to check fluid levels? Squat underneath the trailer for inspection? Crank a crank handle to raise and lower the trailer? Walk more than 10 Feet in cold weather to use the restroom?

Just pointing out a few things. Too many new drivers think all they have to do is shift gears and hold the steering wheel. But there is a whole llot. More to it than that.

Let me clarify why I am asking these questions. Yes, I can do these things that you mention, and I am not so naive to think this is just a job holding a steering wheel.

It may be that I will have to go through Drivers Solutions to get my CDL-A to hire on with USA Truck. As I am sure you know, that will require a one year iron clad contract to pay back the tuition. Obviously, it is imperative that once I obtain my CDL and reach orientation, I can pass the company physical. Failure means I am out the full cost of the tuition with no job. Therefore, it is in my best interests to know exactly what to expect during the physical, so I can prepare in advance to ensure I can do what is required "during the physical" by testing myself beforehand. I hope this clarifies my intent.

In a nutshell, reasonably good health. Stable mind and you are in. I've trained older students than you (72) and he is still driving today. If driving is what you want to do. Then hop to it.

I believe I will make it, but just trying to cover all the bases that I can. USA Truck is high on my list, and probably number one if I end up having to sign a contract. Prime looks good, but only lightweight trucks are available for the newbies I think, although that is certainly not a deal breaker. I like Con-way a lot from what I have researched, but I will need to come up with a good chunk of change to go with them. It does not really make a lot of difference in the end, as I can stand any company for a year or more. I just got to get hired.

USA doesn't do any physical or agility test range of motion or grip test etc. Beleave that is all u asked for nothing about dot requirements or drug LOL. All they test for is drug, and d.o.t physical, all I did was the piss test, background check etc.

If u read these forums a lot of people talk negative about USA and yes they have bad apples etc, but what company doesn't its what you make of it I've been here for going on 14 mths, and only have a hand full of bad checks etc, mostly due to breakdowns. But if you do your job right it can pan out in your favor. Its a little rough at first buy it gets better, atleast it has for me (miles, truck,Fm,home time) have greatly improved over the year.
