When I first started and called for my trainer assignment they gave me a choice of smoker or non-smoker. As far as I know that hasn't changed. Good luck to you.

USA's policy on smoke is basically that you can't smoke in the terminals and shippers/consignees that have a no smoking policy. In your own truck you do as you please.
As for trainers, you'll be asked if you prefer a Smoker, Non-Smoker, Or 'no preference'. And you'll be placed accordingly.
As for female/male trainers. USA has NO FEMALE TRAINERS (that I know), as this is due to the fact that A) Most females don't want to train, and B) Not alot of female students coming through -- Most of the female drivers don't want to be put with a male student that they run the risk of being harrassed by (or worse).
On the bright side. From the female drivers and trainees that I've ran across from time to time, this is not a problem. MOST of the trainers are very respectful for the female students in thier truck. If any female student should find herself in a situation where she's not comfortable with her trainer due to harrasement, etc -- she's more than welcome to bring this concern to the attention of her training coordinator (When you're stopped for dinner, showers, etc is a good time to make this call).
hmm... can someone tell me what this pedal on the left is for?Baack Thanks this.
