The road test is tight. You'll have to pay attention to your setup for curves ect...

    The_Fugitive Thanks this.

I noticed your questions about USA Truck. I know this question was actually about pets, however for those that were asking about working at USA Truck, I thought I might be able to give you a bit of information.

I'm currently a driver with USA. I find it to be a decent starter company overall.

As for the upgrade testing, it's a bit tricky. Part of it is written, simply an 'open book' question and answer as well as route planning and logging, and demonstration of the understanding of the 11 and 14 hour rules. (Note: You can WORK after the 14th hour, but you CANNOT DRIVE)

The Road test is where it gets a bit tricky. The road test (if you do your upgrade in Van Buren) is given in parts of downtown Fort Smith. The test includes observation (Calling out signs as you see them; Checking mirrors, etc), as well as turns, lane changes, and other traffic manuvers. A bit of a warning here, some of the turns in Fort Smith were not designed for a 53' trailer, but CAN be made with the proper setup and execution. Also, there is a part of the test where you will be going around a right hand curve with a concrete barrier on the right side. If you do not see this before hand, and acquire/control the MIDDLE OF THE ROAD before reaching this point, your trailer will hit and/or get hung up on 'the wall of shame' (Yes, this could very well end your career with USA Truck).

The only other part of the test is simply backing between barrels. You're given 10 minutes (clock starts when you put truck in reverse) to place the truck and trailer between the barrels. You're given UNLIMITED pull-ups. Primary requirement: DON'T HIT ANY BARRELS!!

As for making the right hand turns in downtown Fort Smith (and anywhere you find a tight right hand turn for that matter), the following steps will ensure you are successful in your manuevers:

    1) Notice the turn BEFORE you reach it and decide if it will be a tight manuever or not.

    2) If you deem this a 'tight right hand turn', 53' before you reach the intersection you should find a point diagnolly across from the curb you are going AROUND (i.e. stop sign for traffic coming TOWARDS you -- Note, it's on your left on the other side of the road, of course)

    3) When clear, begin driving TOWARDS this point you selected. Do NOT veer off this course!!!

    4) Once your steer tires reach the center of the road your turning onto (may or may not be the point where the lines are), turn the wheel hard right

    5) KEEP YOUR TRACTOR ON THE LEFT SIDE OF THE ROAD!!! If there is a vehicle in your way: Stop, make eye contact, and wait for them to move. Remember, you're in control.

    6) While making the turn, watch your right hand hood-mounted mirror to insure that the back of your trailer is not going to strike any obstacles.

    7) Once your trailer wheels begin to move around the curb, begin to bring the tractor back to the right side of the road. DO NOT DO THIS WITH A HARD RIGHT TURN. Simply turn the wheel a little to the right and let the tractor move over gradually. (Unless there is oncoming traffic that REQUIRES you to come back over quickly -- give them a chance to back up first)

Some of you have heard about 'button-hooking' a turn such as this. Many of the turns in Fort Smith cannot be made with 'button-hooking', but can almost ALWAYS be made with this manuever. Remember, you are allowed BY LAW to use all the space necessary to safely make any manuever that is required as long as you remember to 'give it back' when you're done.

    Baack Thanks this.
