We have a 99 Volvo with a D12 in it. For a while now, when ever you start it at an idle it acts like its going to die and sometimes does and then goes back to normal idle. Someone drove it the other day and then they pulled it in the driveway and it wouldnt open up, all it does is idle now. What could be the problem? It has fuel. Thanks

Does it have one of those auto-shift transmissions without a clutch pedal? That's what they do when the trans gets hung in two gears, won't move, nothing but idle.

It has a super 10 in it. I havent checked the dash codes yet. Could it be the fuel filter maybe?

I went over to it and checked the codes. When you start it it says check Brakes, Cab controller, and Engine at next stop. It also says in the brakes section SAE J1939 communication error. Cab controller SAE J1939 component failure. Engine SAE J1939 component failure. Then it says "Non spec syst. MID (127) not responding". It only revs to 1600 rpm, and theres a delay after you shut the switch off before it kills it. Sounds like the code you mentioned but what is it thats bad? Also is there a way I can reset the password or make a new one to reset the fault codes?

Only if you own the old one , if not is only a Volvo Dealer able to reset them , both
the fault codes and the access code a protected to prevent the Codes from
    deleting by Companie Drivers .
I think you bought this Truck Used , and you got the Code not with the Papers ,
because if you buy one Volvo Truck new , is the Code 0000 , and it's up to the Buyer to set one Protection Code , I know this because I had 3 Years worked as mechanic for a Volvo Dealer in MB , sorry for the bad news .

Yes this truck was bought used along with 2 others identical to it. We don't have the codes on any of them. Maybe the dealer could get them for us then. thanks

Went to drive it to the shop today and it worked just fine, and there are no active fault codes. What would cause that?

the reason is since the last Engine start is there no on false Signal , but in the Memory is the Fault Code History , this a the inactive Faults , same times can a to fast Start be the reason , because the Computer self test isn't complete so there is one or more Sensor signals missing and if there is a similar Situation in the Memory is there the chance the Computer gos in the Safe Mode because he thinks there is one big Fault and a damage is for the Engine possible , I think you got there two thinks to do , first go to the Shop and erase the inactive Fault codes and second check your Wiring harness in the Engine bay for chaffing spots or Insulation damage and all Connectors for her Rubber seal inserts , moisture somewhere in the Harness is often the reason for a behavior like this on older Volvo Trucks
