    Volvo 780 2007 #495,800 miles with 3.55 rear end, 10 speed trans.
My I-shift trans is making noise in tenth gear only, the rest of the shifts are fine, the noise comes when I lift my foot off the fuel pedal, #like going down an hill, the trans makes an rumbling noise, if I remove my foot from the fuel pedal completely or push the pedal down for more power the noise disappears, to me it feels like a throw out bearing or a clutch is wearing. #Also the clutch pedal engages right at the top of the Stroke, there's is no free play in the clutch, the Volvo dealer said, thats how all the I-shift clutches are set up.
I was just wondering do I have a problem with the trans or the clutch I'll like to get this fixed before it's an real problem.

    Any help would be great.

    IGOR-UA Thanks this.

Same think happened on my 07 and it's probably not the tranny. Get out and see if your air bags are filling up. They probably aren't and it's a leveling valve that is the problem. Without the air bags filling up it puts the drive shaft in a bind and makes the noise. Get it fixed ASAP and don't drive far on it if this is the case or you could have HUGE problems.

Thanks for the information but I believe it's transmission or the clutch, #since I dropped and hook 3 to 4 times a day, and lower and raise the airbags at least 3 to 4 times a day I'm still point my finger toward the transmission or the clutch is the problem, thanks for the info.

it is temporary.... the best way is to change bad parts.
But really I cant be sure what is wrong when I cant inspect tranny myself. Look for good tranny technician....

You only here the noise in question when the truck is in tenth gear and going over 62 MPH or bobtailing ( the noise is louder ). When I pull heavy loads, the noise in question is not to bad! ( you can hear it and feel in the truck ).

Today I had that noise in the tarnny big time, I though the tranny was going to let go, I polled over to the side of the road and found an broken air lever for the air bags on the bottom of the bellows cross member. You were right about noise coming from the drive shaft. After some duck tape zip ties I was back in business.

I still have the noise like I had before, but not like today.
