did you happen to get the lash settings? also, what kind of tool do they make (if any) to lift the rocker arm and shaft? i know detroit makes a "crab puller" that you can lift rocker arms out with ease and keep them together... any ideas on that?

injector settings depend on what injector is used? Lucas, Bosh? Delphi?

I talked to a Volvo tech today. He told me that there are marks on the Cam Gear and numbers for the proper location of the cam to adjust that cylinder. He told me that there is a special gear jig thing that is installed in the PTO opening which meshes with the flywheel to turn the engine over. I asked if you could use the starter motor and he aid yes. He also told me in a cinch when he didn't have help to climb under truck and fan belts are tight he uses the bolt on alternator. I would think "Bump" it close with starter motor then get it on the mark with the alternator pulley.

The engine needs to be stone cold.

Everyone says not to adjust exhaust valves. I speculate they need a tool to compress spring and shims are used.

He told me the injectors need a preload as Pablo has written about. When I asked, just touching then 180° further he said "4 flats" more like 240°.

Intake valve lash is 0.2mm or 0.00787" A tight .007 feeler gauge no go .008 feeler gauge?

I was also told the "Bridges" need to be adjusted first. If your just checking or tweeking a few valves I would try to do it myself. It seems to me the 4 hours and parts they charge for the job are worth it if you need more than that.

If anyone has any more info / corrections please PLEASE P L E A S E add to this so the correct procedure is available here for all that need it

    My 2°¢ worth

to use starter motor is recomended by Volvo, but it is not acurate enought and we use to correct cranshaft position turning it with flyghtwheel teeth by big flat screw driver.

it is easy... but you have to lay down under truck. and some abs exercises))))

    jakemcclure Thanks this.

Thanks WildRose and pablo. Just to be sure, when you say adjust bridges first... do you adjust them to .02mm as well?

    Thanks,

I just opened the valve cover. I couldn't see markings on the gear. I could see where crud was removed and some one had put a 1 and 4 mark on it. There are Tabs on a plate on it I could see for the cam poison sensor. I tried pushing a .007" gague in what I thought were the intake valves. Though some were loose, none would let me push a 007 or 005 gauge in. What I am thinking are the exhaust had a huge amount of play. I just don't know. Putting the cover back on and waiting for the service manual to come. No one ever explained the bridge adjustment to me yet.

I just had injector cups installed. It seems to me a valve or two are loosening. I thought I might be able to find/adjust them. No such luck today.

It is so hard to get everybody's schedules together to get it in to get looked at. Especially for warrante work and they wanted it to sit over night so engine would be cold. I am sure they realize its a double dollar wammy for O/O's to take the truck off line for service.

any comments or suggestions are always welcome

    Rosie
