Society of Automotive Engineers SAE J1939 is the vehicle bus standard used for communication and diagnostics among vehicle components, originally by the car and heavy duty truck industry in the United States.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/J1939

I would suspect a computer (sensor) issue, basically your computers (sensors) stop talking to each other.

Sounds like once the module warms up it starts acting right. I had a VW that untill the engine hit 212 degrees the Cruise control would not work.

The shop needs to run diag on your system.

Try looking them here depending on your engine/transmission.

Doing some look around on the web and found something similar to yours but on a Ford diesel.

Engine #1 (MID 128) reports Variable Geometry Turbocharger Actuator #1 (SID 27) is Mechanical system not responding properly (FMI 7)

    diesel particulate filter being clogged

    turbo is sticking

Thank u kindly sir. I have no codes whatsoever on the dash. An invisible hand "fixed" probably the turbo actuator and VGT.

My frustration is similar to to the thread starter. If his truck has problems only when the engine is cold what if they would replace the engine computer with a new one and take the truck on a road test and see if still the problem persist and then come with a 100% diagnostic to him. Coz the way they do is keep replacing parts till the problem is fixed no matter how much the owner of the truck has to spend.
Volvo it's not a nightmare how a lot of people think. It was built by humans. The ONLY problem with this brand is that there are no REAL qualified technicians in North America for this engine. In Europe is different.

Now if I go to the shop, they will start guessing. A mechanic should be like a doctor. Run tests and then come up with diagnostic based on his experience/skills. But unfortunately Volvo people are just parts replacers till the problem is solved.

Thanx again for consulting. I will keep an eye on my "invisible" problem. I hope the thread starter will find a shop with a real mechanic who will fix his problem.

Any shop should be able to plug into your computer and see the codes that have popped before. Codes will only show on the dash when they are active. Once the fault "goes away" the inactive code will not show, but will be in the computer till they clear them out.

How they use the codes and trace them down to the right part that is causing the issue is depending on the quality of the mechanic.
