    Hi Guys
I hate to resurrect a thread this old but after a lot of searching this thread was the most relevant to my issue. I recently bought for a song 6 1998 Volvo WIA64T tractors (built dec 1997) with what I assume are D12 A model engines. They all are in excellent shape and all run well but are real dog's on a hill. The mechanic from where I bought them said when they were new they ran & pulled excellent and got 7+ mpg. In the early 2000's they got a mandated letter from Volvo stating the trucks needed to come in and get new emissions programming (he thinks thats what it said) so they took them all to the dealer and it was done. When they got them back they didn't pull, they got around 6mpg, they only turn 1800 rpm and even their cummins 300 equiped ancient KW's would blow these 425's off the hill. Nobody drove them after that much so they sat a lot.

The owner raised he11 with he dealer who said there was nothing they could do, it was mandated to meet emissions. These machines have no egr or emissions equipment they are basic d12's.

I have had the trucks to MANY volvo dealers who cant even connect to the trucks to even clear codes with their new notebooks and interfaces and I was about to give up. With so many of these on the road I was really dissapointed that Volvo will not support their own trucks long before they are worn out.

I even took 2 of them to the Effingham Il diesel doctors (there are 3 of them with the same name in the same town doing the same thing) and they cant talk to them, although the diesel doctor with the lady mary could at least pull the codes.

After days of reading online in my spare time I understand I need the 9998555 interface box for my trucks, a laptop or computer with a real rs232 serial interface (hard to find anymore) and a copy of vcads pro 2.29. Does this sound correct? I have read where other interfaces work sometimes and tech tool etc may work but all 3 diesel doctors tried many interfaces and several versions of tech tool with no joy.

I have the standard J1708/J1587 connector down on the kick panel at my left ankle
The engine states in the tag it is a Volvo VE D12-425 180 Serial D12093470

Any help would be appreciated. if you have the means to work with this engine and live in the eastern half of the US I'd be happy to pay to get some work done or if you have any of the items i'd need to set myself up or know where I can get them that would also be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks in advance!

yep, in 2000 there was euro-2 to euro-3 conversion program, but it was not really easy becouse old ECMs got no flash memory. As I remember they used one UV EPROM and one parallel EPROM. And it was not so easy so many old truck users ignored it.

Here many old D12A/B keep running.

Ok, it is not all, now all D12A, and 123 and pre 123 engines are not under support. New Volvo software and adapters do not work with old rigs.

D12A ECM is not fully J1587 compatible, so RP1210A adapters cant work well! To work on old Volvos you need VCADs Pro ore Volvo Toolbox but NOT TECH TOOL. You need only old 9998555 adapter and laptop with 232 (COM port). Dealers do not support old engines and they sell only parts that D12A shares with D12C/D. The only unique part of D12A is injector. D12A was supplied with Lukas and Bosch injectors (not exchangable), never mix them up!

One more weak thing of D12A tha ECM is fuel cooled. Cooling passages are big with thin walls. pump sucks fuel throught ECM and never use any priming pump ore air "before" ECM. Pressurized ECM may be ruined and may be boyoung repare!

Really I love old Volvos, but they are too old and it is hard to find truck in good condition. Other problem - they cant meet newer emission standards (EPA2002 ore Euro-3), so its use is limited

Thanks Pablo. I have an older notebook computer I can use, I will look for the 9998555 and I will try to find vcads pro. What version of vcads should I look for or should I use the volvo toolbox? And with either software what parameters can I set or change in my ECM? I need the cruise set from 55mph up to 70mph (speed limits here are 70. And other things like getting the 2100 rpm back the way it used to be and not the 1800 they were programed to at the dealer. Small things like that. Thanks again for your help.

Toolbox is software for D12A and D12B. Was used with windows 3. Any VCADs pro works with D12A and pre D12 engines, but.... in pre D12A engines with Bosch M7 system support no J1587, they used K/L-line (now developed in ISO9141), so 9998555 had built in K-L adapter. It is also used for old Wabco ABS-C unit (additional 8-pin connector)

So which software gives me the most access to parameters like HP and torque and speed limit, cruise etc. Vcads or toolbox and which versions should I look for? is there a schematic for the 9998555 anywhere online? I am an electronic engineer by trade and could probably build an interface faster than I could order one or if not where should I look to buy one? Thanks again.

with d12a yoy cant change HP with vcads. one more time - no flash in d12a ECM. they used UV eraseble memory. I have memory dumps of d12a but for 24v ECMs. so first of all you have to collect memory dumps from different engines. to do it you have to purchase chip rogramming tool (I use Beeprog), desolder tool for DIP chips (vacuum deslolder) and take apart every ECM. really D12A was available in 330-380-420-465 HP with Bosch and Lucas injectors. People say 400 hp was on market too. weak engines had cast pistons, more powerful - articulated pistons. and if you use 465 hp ECM on 380 HP engine you may get pistons melt down

The only thing I would really like to do is set my cruise up to 70mph, and set the rpm's back to 2100 instead of the 1800 they set them back to when they recalled the trucks for emissions programming. Can I do those things?
