Tonight I had a new driver "abuse" my Ishift, I am hoping no lasting damage, but I definately think my clutch life has been shortened substantially.
Basically, he got stuck pulling out on an approach in some snow, and attempted to rock himself free, finally giving up and calling me to come into town and tow him with my half ton.
I arrived, hooked on, and it wouldn't budge, turns out it wouldn't even go into gear, so I jumped in, turned truck off, let it sit for a minute, immediatly noticed a smell of burning clutch, started it back up and it would go into gear.
I questioned my driver as to wtf happened, he said "clutch overheat protection" come up on the DID.
So has anyone else had that happen? What is the normal lifespan of a Ishift clutch? I hope having the D16 heavy duty ishift that it shut it down before any major damage.
We got it out, and it shifts fine now, smell is gone, things have cooled off, my only concern is lifespan. I can only imagine the clutches aren't cheap... thankfully he was empty, not loaded.
Thanks for any input!

I can't answer for I-shift, but the Eaton-Fuller Ultra Shift clutch itself seemed tough, and I have heard the I-shift is better, hope it is.

Tthe clutch protection is very sensative, it will flash at you with very little provocation, that said, if you could smell it, he probably took some life off it, if its functioning ok i wouldnt wory about it too much, but definetly slap his wrists and tell him when he sees the warning on the dash STOP.

Scania man Thanks this. -
Don't worry about it, safeguards on those can be very sensitive, as for the smell, it may have got a little toasty but I couldn't imagine any lasting damage as the safeguard would prevent that, we have those gearboxes for over 10 years and they are pretty tough. The clutches are just normal clutches as far as I know

Good to know, thanks guys, and as for the slap on the wrist, the tone in my voice and the look on my voice when I said, "Whatever you DID, don't ever do it again!"
This is our first time being stuck with it, so I can't get to over the top with him, as even I have never had one of these units stuck before.. Oh well, live and learn.
Good to know though about the clutch protection being very sensitive though.
I will kive kudos to Volvo, we recently had a major winter front come thru, lots of freezing rain, heavy wet snow and the roadways were completely shot, between the traction control system, and everything else, it kept the unit straight, even when you touched the foot feed and it would spin, it didn't have the tendency to want to slip the back end left/right. Now obviously a person still has to have common sense, but I did notice it worked well. -
Excellent, havent had mine in snow yet, tho im sure it will happen soon.......

really I-shift clutch system was changed in 2006
They introdused oress in clutch cover (not pull out to disangage). Of course more force to depress. Clutch servo is coaxial style.
so pressure plate life is much longer and clutch is lightweight.
Internal clutch temperature sensor avoid abuse, but any good system may be damaged with poor drivingScania man, Mlaz Bogdanci and IGOR-UA Thank this. -
