don't know about d13...have d12 and it's a good engine..well ERGs suck big time..but name one new engine without emission control problems..
NO on warranty on NEW truck it's unusual...maybe just 4 me... but sounds fishy....had run new dd15(had it at shop ones a month) with 0 mls on it..the engine was smelly 4 a month..as all the oil and stuff were burning out of it..don't all new engines smell? maybe it's the problem?and there is nothing to fix under the warranty...and volvo's engines don't do hills well even when all good.don't buy truck with o mls on it..it can has many bugs in it...300000mls should kill half of them..))

Don't say that. I have a Volvo and anytime I went to Volvo for warranty issues they always find something that should be fixed before they address the real issue. And most of the time it is a striaght forward issue. Example 1 - One of my trucks "Volvo" was overheating and that was clearly the head gasket from all the symptoms. They hook up the computer and said ÿou need to replace the EGR cooler first because there are EGR codes". If the temperature rises or drops from normal; if the compression drops or rises from the normal; if moist gets into the combustion chamber, you have a bunch of EGR codes because emissions have been affected. So fixing the head should be the first thing, but they like tio fix the EGR first and then realize that it was not the EGR but they will never admit it.
Example 2 - Most Volvo's I see at the truck stops have coolant overflow probs, mostly because of the injector cups. Try to go to Volvo and claim injector cups on this case. They will try to sale you the BS that you need a general computer test under running engine to suck up 3 hrs of labor. Then comes the rad flash etc because your rad might be clogged even if your truck is new and have coolant filters. Right there you are $450.00 out of pocket plus taxes. I don't need to tell you more. Average Volvo truck costs our company more than 15k in repairs at the dealer. Some repairs can be done outside the Volvo umbrella Luckily. Vovlo mechanics have that dr. alike behavior with latex gloves and unnecessary gadgets. Well the computer said that and that and that; no more brains or common sense. For them if the computer gives out and EGR fault code they want to replace your EGR valve and your EGR cooler. Sometimes it is just the harness connector to the EGR valve, sometimes it is just a leaking hose or rubber oRing or a bracket on the EGR cooler and/or surrounding pipes. Please do not scorn of a driver trying to earn its life with a bad truck added with a bad representation. You will find that Volvo dealers in Canada are booking 2 weeks ahead now. Respect...

When you going uphill check your exhaust manifold temperature gauge; it is on the right upper corner. If the temperature rises fast to 600 - 900 degrees when you ask for power uphill you have an exhaust valve problem. The smell you talking about I suspect is not the EGR smell. the EGR smell only comes up when it regens and it is not that strong. If you have an injector fault code but your truck is not shaking it is an exhaust valve. D 13 are famous for exhaust valve problems, not all of them but from 2008 to 2011 are.

The man says he has laid out TWENTY THREE THOUAND DOLLARS on a truck that is supposed to have warranty. Not only do I find that suspect but it is totally insane. I can't realistically believe that every shop he has contacted has told him to pound salt, doesn't make sense. And listen, I'm not scorning anyone, giving thoughts on a situation that IMO again doesn't make sense.

D13 engine are great, i think your problems are most related with bad tech and bad dealer, i dont know what is your problems exactly, but i can tell you that if you were at my volvo dealer your problems were fix.

Yep, very good fuel economy plenty of power; i have over 1.3 million miles original motor, still pulling ok, 8-9mpg; the weak designed parts from my experience; injector cups ,leaking exhaust manifold, camshaft cilinder #5 exhaust valve cam premature wearing, sensors , blow by oil separator leak, weak belt tensioner, turbo actuator, and fuel filter housing.
