    A 2009 engine or a 2010 with DEF?
    And at what price?

    about transmission;
    My last truck was a volvo 770, model 2001, Detroit D60/ 3 pedals autoshift, ( ex Us Xpress truck) got it used with 400k miles in 2003; and I don't recomend automatic transmissions without warranty on used trucks. I wasted 20,000$ in 3-4 years only on transmission repairs/ towing.I know I-shift is better built, but believe me you'll waste hard worked $$$ on this transmission.
    My truck now, Volvo 780 i have Eaton 13 speed, manual; all i did soo far is 3 oil changes, still working like new.
    Motor D13;
    I have same motor,D13 (after i sold my Volvo 770 got a new 780 in august 2007, but model 2008.) I'm team, i have over 1 million miles on original engine, i replaced injector caps twice , manifold ,wasted about 20-30,,000$ on emission repairs, but... i replaced my EGR and DPF for 1st time this year in May after 900,000 miles.
    I'm O/O for Celadon Canada, average weight i'm pulling is around 25-30,000 lbs. ( i have loads 44,000 lbs and below 10,000 lbs), running mostly flat roads from Ontario to midwest/Texas. Why i'm telling you this; my last truck working for same company without any EGR/DPF , the Detroit D60, i used to get 6.8 MPG in winter/ 7.1-7.2 in warm weather. With D13.... i get 7.8-8 MPG in Winter/ and 8.2-8.5 in warm weather( monthly average).Talking about fuel economy my Volvo D13 with all the emission crap is eatting the pre-emission Detroit D60 for breakfast.

    Do the math; 1 million miles with average 7 MPG or 8 MPG; and diesel price average aprox 3$ gal since 2007====> over 50,000$ savings in fuel. This motor would be perfect without EGR/DPF, ; i still have problems sometimes with sensors, but i keep spare differential presure, bust presure, NOx sensors and replace myself. I have many friends truckers O/O most of D13 owners are getting about same MPG, even on new models with DEF.
    Imop; Yes for motor; No for transmission= overall No; look for one with manual 10/13/18 speed.

    I-shift is a good tranny but not all the workshops can work on it. For example you need TechTool software to remove upper cover with rails becouse it is impossible till splitter fork is in rear position.

    After any work on clutch ore transmission computer guy needed to calibrate tranny. It is not self calibrating as ZF.

    DEF.... it is nightmare of all new engines, unfortunatly no way to avoid with Euro-5 and EPA 2010/ Newer EPA 2012 and Euro -6 - more problems, becouse catalistic converter (DOC) is used in combination with DEF, EGR,DPF and other crap.

    Good thing - Volvo use pump injector units, not modern CRD/XPI/SMART systems, weak with cold ore bad fuel

    Thats good to know Johny, thanks for the input for me our loads avg. 20,000 we are required to p/u a 46,000 lb load, for the time i've been here 45,500 is the heaviest i've ever hauled. I've heard 780's are heavy units.

    Speaking of the EGR does yours have just 1 or 2? I read somewhere on here that 2007 and newer they fixed something where they can just have 1 now. Plus not if but when it goes out how much would it set me back in $'s. Is it something you can drive to shop or is it like a fuel filter when its out your on the side of the road?

    I do not drive volvo, I own shaker, but I work on volvos. company I work for got a fleet of Volvo with D13 engines (440 HP, DEF). Pre DEF engines (marked Euro-IV in EU) have weak VNT and EGR systems. May be the problem is that we have to use Russian fuel (there is no ULSD in Russia) and we use to get stuck VNT ore stuck EGR issues.

    I like old pre EGR engines, but D13 w/o EGR is Euro-3 and we cant use them in Europe with hight duties and road toll rates.

    I cant say what new emission engine is better, but all have similar problems with emission stuff.

    Ouh, if you wanna volvo look at compressor. If it is Wabco - there is not cyl. head repare kit and when unloader goes bad you have to get rebuilt compressor from Wabco ore Volvo and back the core

    yeah Pablo, I think i'm going to let this idea go until I hear better reviews on the motors. Thats to bad because they look and drive good. I will probably end up getting a 2007 kw from my company. I have a week till I make my puchase.
