    Anybody can help me?
I am in confused situation which engine package will be better choice to buy volvo 780.
    Volvo d13 500HP with I-Shift or d16 500HP with I-Shift?

One of my friend recently purchased Volvo 780 with D13 500Hp with I-Shift.
This package runs with 1750 torque and he looks pretty happy.

But as I know, D16 500HP with I-shift goes with more torque of 1850.

Considering British Columbia, canada area with lots of mountain driving condition,
I guess my choice could be more powerful D16 engine.

But one operator told me D16 could have more problems than D13 engine family.
And considering fuel effiency, D13 is a better choice?

    Please help me to decide.

yes what you heard is the general consensus of Volvo dealers, the D13 is more reliable with less problems, and more fuel efficient than the D16. But if you really need the monster motor the D16 has more torque, but if you really need the big engine I'd go with an ISX and of course then a different tranny.

I would definitely stay away from the D16. There has been a lot of injector problems as well as crankshaft problems. The D13 has the common EGR problems that most nrw engines have, but is more reliable. If you can I would go with Cummins, better power and reliability and way cheaper to work on as well as easier to find parts. Good Luck!!

I have a 2013 D13 I shift. Works great mine is 455 with Eco torque, pulls as well as my 387 with the C15 and I'm over a mile per gallon to the good, hoping by the time it's broke in it will be 1.5 mpg better. The 455 HP rating can be changed to 500 if you want but the extended warranties are much cheaper if the HP rating is ordered below 460? Don't know why, that's just the way Volvo does it.
So far. Love my 780 no issues, couple adjustments, tRuck is crazy smooth and quiet!! WAYYY BETTER THAN MY CRAPCADIA!

    Thanks Elroythekid.
    Highly appreciated for your post.
I am happy to hear you are satisfied with 780 and 455 HP.
I heard that D13 455Hp and i-shift combination is the real XE13 Package other than 500HP is not an official XE13 Pack.
So I am still hesitating to choose in between 455HP and 500HP.

I don't think you will miss the 45 HP as long as you get the Eco torque, it will go to 1750 ftlbs for a hard pull and torque is where it's At as far as getting you up the hills. So far I'm real happy.
