hello, new here and any help would be greatly appreciated, as I am trying to change the sleeper air suspension bags. I sprayed them w/wd40, made sure the bags had air, lifted the cab with a jack, let the air out and tried to unscrew it (since the new one has a screw at the top), I tried to pry it with a small crow bar, I tried everything you can think of and NOTHING!!! it won't budge! (I changed the carrier bearing and a u-joint all by myself without a problem, but this is insane). should I try to cut the bag and see if it has a screw/nut inside? any tips and help is welcomed, ty all very much.:biggrin_25513:

Mine was a 1999 and did have a screw top. You might have to add some heat to loosen the threads.

    Dogan Thanks this.

Ok, will try that, however it will be hard since the screw uptop is sealed/burried inside the u-shaped traverse welded to the bottom of the cab floor. should I try cutting the air bag in half to get a better grip of it? thank you very much Blanco.

I did change mine last week... it was hard to unscrew it but after cutting all rubber from the top I got to the metal peace to get a good grip with pliers..
I unscrew it a little bit but wasnt careful enough and welkd in side the frame broke.. so after all I had to cut it.. since didnt have anything to screw the new one back I just put it in without any "locking"
its been 1000 local miles since and the bag didnt turn a bit.. so dont really think that screw at the top is really necessary

    Dogan Thanks this.

thank you bravoo67, I will cut it as well. it was something I wanted to do initially, but was afraid something might go bad. if that doesn't work, I'll torch it, as mentioned by blanco. tyvm.

    you are welcome
if weld brakes and you have to cut the bag out and still want to put the nut on top of it.. my mechanic said he usually cuts a little hole on the side of the frame just to put the screw in cab frame.. good luck

I see, if not, the weight of the cab should hold it in place. as yours did and as freightliners and other american trucks do. (no screw top). thanks again bravoo67.

Ok, so I got both air bags out. cut them open and with a 3" pipe wrench from home depot ($10.96) unscrewed them from the top metal part. I tried heating them with a torch didn't work, beacause the screw welds in the interior were rusty so they broke easily. I cut a hole on the back so that I can hold the screw with a fixed wrench while unscrewing the old ones and tightening the new ones back in. about 1.5-2 hours. thank God I'm a little mechanically inclined! the dealer would have robbed me. $115/hr, plus shop fees, tool use fees, environmental fees, taxes etc. etc. plus parts. thank you all for your help.
