Injector wiring harness Oil leak

    I have an oil leak on the back of the wiring harness (looks like the injectors wire harness) in the back of the head. 2006 D12D 465hp. Just wondering how complicated it is to change. The harness has an O ring on it but looks like its leaking through the wires. tried resealing it but no luck!

    I had the same problem a few years ago with an older Detroit engine. There is a seal made onto the wiring harness and it wasn't replacable on mine. The newer ones may be different. I fixed mine with regular silicone. I use the orange hit-temp stuff for everything. The hardest part is getting it clean enough. Take the valve cover off and it should be accessible enough to fix. If you have enough slack in the harness it's not too hard. If not, you have to disconnect each injector and jake brake connector and pull the entire harness out. I found the best way to clean it is with ether. It cleans off oil really well and dries fast leaving the wires completely clean. Once it's clean, put it back into place and reconnect the ends to their respective locations. Put the silicone on from the inside. You need to work it in between each and all the wires and sorta work them around to make sure it gets on them all. Last thing is to work it around the inside of the opening the wire harness goes thru in the head. Let it sit undisturbed overnight if possible to make sure the silicone has sat up good. After that seal around the outside of the opening in the same manner but don't put much preasure on the harness if you can avoid it. If there is a retainer of sort holding the harness in place put it back while the silicone is still pliable. If there isn't one, try to secure it somehow as close to the opening as possible. Once this has sat up and the silicone has cured it will not leak unless the harness gets pulled somehow and tears the silicone. Remember, this harness should not have anything pulling on it and should have enough slack to let the engine vibrate without pulling on it. Also, there's not a lot of preasure inside the head to blow oil out unless you have compression loss in the engine. If that's the case it's time for an overhaul. Hope this helps ya. Good luck!

    If the wiring harness is leaking, replace it. Eventually it will start shorting out, could leave you on the side of the road eventually. Ny 515det's harness starting leaking, the engine light stated coming on and engine began to miss fire eventually. When I took it to Det, their computer said I needed 6 injectors. However the tech said tha's due to the harness being bad. $300.00 later problem fixed. Since you have to replace it, ask them to discount a top tune for you as well. In otherwards, do a top tune and ask them to install harness while their doing it. Top tune can save you money in MPGs. They have to pull the valve cover off anyway and supply the new casget, so do it all at once.

    This is good advice to an extent. If the wires are frayed they will cross-connect or ground out and cause more trouble. However, when you clean them you can find if this is the case. When I cleaned and sealed mine I ran it for another 10 years trouble free and even went thru one head removal with no problem. Either way, make sure to take a good look at the condition of the wires themselves.

    volvo just came out with a wire repair kit to address this problem.don't recall part number,just ask parts counter at volvo.i am a professional and have done it 4 times.still takes me about 3 hours to do neatly.still cheaper and easier than replacing complete injector harness.

    To replace the harness is really expensive on the other had we have bout 20 volvo engines in our company and every single one is leaking from the injector harness not one of them has any injector wiring issues you can try to clean neatly with brake cleaner and put silicone but most of the time it's a very temporary fix So on other words either spend a lot of money or learn to deal with it.

    Just a poor stupid design. Once again it was built to fail. Wires are to thin of a gauge, the rubber/plastic turns hard and breaks then starts shorting out and setting of sensors.

    volvo part#21625276.this is the splice in harness that addresses the oil leak through the bulkhead connector on the valve cover.Again it does take time to do neatly and correctly,but it is only around $275.good luck.

    If seeping oil thru wires would be better off replacing injector harness the oil could create a resistence in the wires and not supply full voltage and amps to injectors and they might not open fully or as long as they should.
