Hey guys, any idea? - 2005 Volvo D12 with 940000 miles. Truck ran fine, I filled up and parked a mile away. Few days later started and hell broke loose. When cold, running rough with rpm up and down almost stalling with white smoke puffing out. When I accelerate and raised rpm to 1500 begins to runs normal. Once temperature gets to 170 gets back to normal smooth idling as well, like nothing is wrong. Fuel filter was changed 18000 miles ago. Is it bad fuel, EGR or ??? Any input? Thank you.

Maybe a leaking injector or injector o-ring. I used a thermo gun to find witch cylinder it was on the exhaust manifold on cold start up. Or take off exhaust manifold and fire it up to see. I had a injector O-ring go bad in my old Pet.
alpinex Thanks this. -
Thank you. I will check that.

usually bad injectors

Dude you're egr is stuck open a bit you should have a code of the dash either 146 or 266 the truck almost shuts off the. All of a suden a big puff of smoke blows out and it runs again is that what happening right.

Yes, that's right. But no codes. Thanks.

My truck will do something like this. Change the fuel filters and it's fine again.

I'm almost 100% sure it's egr getting stuck cuz I've seen it bout 1000 times.
PhilKenSebben, KB3MMX, Kanskane and 1 other person Thank this. -
Yes I think so too now, most likely EGR. Did change fuel filter today, no difference. Going to Volvo on Monday - $$$ ouch $$$ I will post the outcome. By the way I've been adding coolant lately, not much but more than usual. Thank you everybody.

Can EGR be cleaned or only replacement? How much typical cost to replace? Should I replace both cooler and the valve?
