I would find something with fewer electronics on it, Vanguard here in Phx sure doesn't know how to work on them!! If you do get it, better find a very good mechanic.

Have the ECM downloaded and that will tell the worst case fuel mileage since you're a bedbugger. We can all guess all day long, but there's no reason to since you have 500,000 miles of data.

only real DOWN SIDE is the D13..... 1st only volvo can work on it ..... 2nd MAKE SURE it's had all the upgrades done to the head....... the 2008 D13 had major problems with injector cups (cracking every 75k-100k miles) our had 4 set go bad in 260K

us xpress stopped getting volvo's because ALL 1,500 2008s had this problem...... i know they fixed it just make sure this truck has had the fix done

Sir, I'm new to the forum and own exactly what you are looking at - 2008 seems to be a watershed year for Volvo as far as problems are concerned. First of all, at that mileage - and if you can afford it - have a independent mechanic diagnose the IShift tranny and check the condition of the Idler gears - Those IShifts tend to deteriorate in both performance and components are starting to wear past minimums and will be problematic. I just replaced mine at a cost of $15,000+. The bull gears: Gear walk-off is an issue with these engines and the repairs are pricey $19-20,000 and it is common in Volvo engines. (there was a recall of sorts for certain incidents involving those gears and volvo engines; you might be able to get it fixed for free...)

Check and replace (or have replaced:)

    - Fan clutch
    - Electronic harness (These engines have a tendency to develop an oil leak right where at the harness port and will contaminate the harness and you will have major problems)
    - Axle and Leaf springs - these will develop hairline cracks over time and will break. Undectable unless spotted by mech and VERY DANGEROUS (axle movement)
    - Charge Air Cooler - has a tendency to rub up against other parts of the radiator frame and wear a hole in it. Check...

    Good Luck!

Be careful with the old Husky shop in Seattle. Seems like everything they touch is screwed up. They were supposed to do the engine recall with the gears and never did that and had to rebuilt the engine instead since it failed on our oldest one. I hope it is getting better since TEC took it over, but we had tons of trouble with that shop and use the TEC shop in Tacoma now. I had a good experience with the Wilsonville OR shop before.

Make sure you have the option for Eco-Roll and the E/P button to change the shift pattern for the hills on the I-shift. Seems like I could easily get a mile per gallon more with the 2013 than the 2011. Both are D-13 500hp with the I-shift. The 13 has 3:36 gears and the 11 has 3:25 gears, but does not have the Eco-roll and the E/P shift option.

Like mentioned before have them do an ECM dump, check that all recalls are done and do some oil sampling. We lost the tranny in the one below, but that was due to lack of oil. The truck was in a head on collision and after they fixed the truck they did not add oil to the transmission and it did not get very far from the body shop since it is a pressure lubricated transmission.

    Good luck

I have a two week old 2014 Volvo 780, D13 455 hp, I-Shift XE package and couldn't have asked for a better, smoother, quieter, powerful truck. I pull a flatbed and the truck acts like I am pulling air even with a 45,000 lb load. It cruises at 65 mph at 1100 rpm and gets over 7 mpg. I have gotten over 8 mpg empty at 70 mph!

The reason I bought the truck was that my 2007 Volvo 780 crapped out on me. I put over $35,000 in repairs in the past two years and when it blew the air compressor, cooling system and air dryer, I'd had enough. The new truck is beyond belief in ride and comfort. All my pertinent controls, including jake brake are on the steering column. The radio comes standard with Sirius or XM, weather, and the controls are on the steering wheel. Blue tooth is standard. Built in 3.2 cu ft refrigerator, factory installed Xantrex 1000 watt inverter/charger. Factory installed shore power outlet. All fairings can be removed for easy access under the truck.

If you are looking for a new truck, I strongly recommend the Volvo 780 with I-shift.
