Hi all, This is my first post to this forum. I have been browsing on here for a few months and have found alot of the info here very helpful.

I recently purchased a 2007 Volvo VNL 64T (daycab) from my carrier in February. It has a 465 D-12 with a 10 speed fuller trans and 46K rears. It currently has a 314XXX miles on it and about 12XXX engine hours. Withtin the first month the EGR valves gave me a check ECU Maintenence reguired message and both EGR's needed to be replaced.

This past Saturday I got a check ECU Maintenece required light for high (or low) fuel pressure. It was an active code until I shut off the engine and I was able to reset it when it went inactive. Today I got the same code again followed by injector #5 component failure. After resetting the codes it was followed by all the Injectors (1 through 6) showing component failure and multiple check ECU maintenence required lights. Some of the injectors showed multiple events. Injector 5 showed 55 in under 1 hour. While some showed only 1 or 2. But the truck was still running. No missing or smoking but there was a noticeable loss of power. The only other thing I noticed was a drop in voltage on the dashboard indicator everytime the Check light came up with the error message. It normally runs around 13.7 and was dropping to 12 and dipped to 11.9. A lurch forward on the brakes and it seemed to go back up to 13.7 but taking off from a dead stop and the voltage dropped to 12.0 again. I was thinking it might be a dead short in the head or something. I brought it to my local Volvo dealer but they are not known to have the best service. Unfortunantely there is no else around here. They have not been able to figure it out yet and think it might be a bad engine ECU? That dosen't seem right to me and I don't want to shell out thousands of dollars for that until I'm sure that's the problem. Any suggestions?

    Thanks,
    Chris P

I would start by opening the valve cover and see if there is a broken spring on any of the injectors when an injector acts up it draws a lot more power that would explain you're dash acting up also tell them to check all the ground on the truck that's a possibility as well the other thing u want to do us hook it up to vcad pro and check why the fuel pressure is if the pump is acting up it will give you injector codes but u definately have to visually inapect injector springs d12 breaks them often and it gives all sorts of weird codes or injectors when it does I highly soubt its an ecu it just doesn't make sense that it would be that.

You have the same simulation I had about a year ago, Found out it was the cam sensor that sits in front of the engine, It gave me the same problem, number four or number six fuel injector problem.

Is the truck hard starting, doest want to start up right away, if so, that is a good indication of a faulty cam or fly wheel Sensor.

Have gone back and forth with Gabrielli Trucks for the past 2 days. They said Volvo says all the data and trouble shooting points to a bad ECU. So they are going to replace the ECU and do a top end service while the truck is in the shop. $3500 all total. After the EGR's and now this I hope this is it for a while. Alot of major things in a few short months.

I hope that's it for you're sake I've seen how this volvo dealers work they have no common sense always by the book ad the customer pays the price for it. I highly doubt it's the ECM I deal with d12 on a daily basis and have only seen 3 go bad in te last 4 years. It's a real shame they don't want to open anything on inspect anything visually computers only take u so far but they never tell u where the problem is

I would start looking at the wiring harness, instead of the ECM

I have the same problem on mine injectors 1 to 6 all of them 255 faults component failure.Went to the dealer they said the same thing ECU.I did injector cut off test all injectors are fine. The harness is new valves are adjusted. The truck starts perfectly even in extreme cold weather and it idles very smoothly. It lacks power sometimes especially in hot weather I feel it recently with weather warming up.Have been driving it like this for a year now cause I wasn't sure about the dealers diagnosis it could be 3000 down the drain and I've heard Volvo Ecu dosent go bad so easy. But it makes sense warmer temperature higher resistance and that's what my code is showing resistance too high.My fuel mileage is 6,7-7mpg so very weird.Definetly not bad injectors.Engine is 07 D12.Please keep us posted

I hate to say it but I think you guys were right. I picked up the truck yesterday. Paid $3000. For the ECU and software plus $500. For a top end service. Within 5 minutes I realized the alternator was not charging. I made it back to my carriers yard where the mechanics and I verified the alternator was no good. I called Volvo screaming and told them I had a voltage issue along with the codes when I dropped it off and they even noted it on my receipt. I am waiting to hear back from them today. But I may have just paid 3K to find out I had a bad alternator.

Service manager called me this morning and aplogized for overlooking my bad alternator. Said he thinks there was an outside possibility it was sending bad info to the ECU but my ECU was definitely bad. I'll be the first one to call BS on that!
