    I have a 2003 volvo 780
with automatic smart shifting and it has been sitting for a month
I drove it today shift 1-5 properly but doesnt go to 6-10
    tried automatic and mannually
Went back to start my truck again after leaving it for 5 hours shifting was working fine than after 15 minutes wouldnt shift in high or low gear
If anyone knows whats going on please help have to get back to work
    Thanks

If its the early I-shift that Volvo used it could be several things.
The I-shift is a fully electronic controlled Meritor 10-speed
Since it shifts thru the first 5 gears.
The most common problem would be the high/low range solenoid.
This is mounted on the top of the trans right behind the shift control unit.
First suggestion before removing that solenoid. Go to a parts store and get a can
of electronic contact cleaner and some dielectric grease. Clean all of the harness
plugs on the transmission ECM, the shift control unit, the high/low range solenoid
    and the clutch solenoid.

If its the early Ultrashift then it gets a bit easier.
The Ultrashift is partially electronic controlled Eaton/Fuller.
The most common problem would be the high/low range splitter. Which is partially
    air controlled, partially electric controlled.
The high/low range splitter is mounted at the rear of the trans above and to the
right of the tail-shaft. There is a air metering solenoid in this system to control
the air flow to the high/low range splitter.
First check the system for an air leak. If no air leak then, go to a parts store and
get a can of electronic contact cleaner and some dielectric grease. Clean all of the
harness plugs on the transmission ECM, the shift control unit, the air metering solenoid
    and the clutch solenoid.

If none of the above works then you may be looking at replacing the transmission ECM
    or the shift control unit.

    Hope the above info helps.

sounds like worn X-Y motors. but in 2003 Volvo used Eaton Autoshift, ZF-Astronic/Freedom, Volvo Geartronic, Alisson, Volvo Powertronic and early I-shift (with external clutch servo, like on ZF, made by Knorr).

So first of all identify tranny, clear all codes with dashboard computer, do test ride and read codes and post code list.

    KB3MMX Thanks this.

This may sound like a bunch of hot air, but it's not. I remember years ago when I was in the Navy, I was an electronics tech. It was really surprising to me just how many times unplugging a component, cleaning the contacts and plugging it in again worked. They even had a job code for "re-seating" the plugs.
I also remember last year when the auto on my 2007 780 wouldn't work. I unplugged the wire to the control box, cleaned the plug and it's worked fine since then.
I suggest doing what he said. You just may save a bunch of money.

    You are Pablo.
I didn't mention the ZF-Astronic/Freedom, Volvo Geartronic, Alisson and Volvo Powertronic
    transmissions.

thanks for the info i have done everything even replaced the solenoid
also took it to the shop they tested the ecm and the shift control unit
even put in new speed sensors
still cannot find the problem when i leave it for an hour it works fine for 30 mins
it works fine in mannually and when i get to 10th gear the service light for the transmission starts blinking my dashboard says check transmission this happens when i get over 60 miles
i think its something that is coming unnconnected after 30 mins of driving
the diagnosis test at the shop said the speed sensors thats why they changed 3 of them but didnt fix the problem
    thanks for your help

if i were you i would check the wire coming from the inside of the cab to the battery most of these problems are from a cut and corroaded wire somewhere so go through it and check to make sure the wire or wires are in good shape

    LT762 Thanks this.
