It's probably a better idea to grease your front end before you hear the popping.

When was the last time you greased your front end? Could just be low on grease. I grease quite often but I do more city work than highway so grease drys up faster.

Check your steering box,and see if it may be loose.I had one that visually looked fine,
It looked seated, but checking for play in the arm,the whole box was loose.
It would pop,but there was also a lot of play in the wheel.

I have had a dry fifth wheel plate cause a clunking while turning.

This last winter in Chicago the grease froze and was easily scraped off the plate. I saw many rusty ones around our yard.

Just one "scraped" hook and mine was dry also. Every turn felt like a front suspension problem.

Dropped that trailer, greased the plate and the turn/clunk was gone.

I would have thought there would be enough grease on the bottom of well used trailers, but no.

Get everything in the front end tightened up.
Then get underneath and get someone to rock the steering.
Look for any movement where there shouldn't be any.
