Any Volvo O-O's (780 class) running an I-Shift?

I'm a little bit old school and doubt seriously I'll ever buy an I-Shift but before I rule out Volvo altogether, I thought I'd see if there were any owner-operators running an xe13 and what are their feelings about it in terms of "do you like it?"

I've always felt carriers bought autos because new drivers didn't know how to drive (say a 13) in a fuel efficient manner in all sorts of conditions and the autos took much of that concern out of the equation. Am I wrong?

It seems you virtually can not get a Volvo without an I-Shift, o-o spec'd or otherwise. My only take away from past Volvo experience is the interior is quiet but those were the little 630's with a 10 speed stick.

Do you like the truck? Do you feel the I-Shift makes you get better economy then if you properly drove a 13?

I'm still leaning Kenworth T680 (with the very risky Paccar engine I know). I may be some of the last old school drivers headed toward retirement but not so old I don't at least consider new technology and ideas.

I had one in a 2011. The I shift was fantastic. The D13 was mediocre in my opinion. I had a lot of problems with the truck in general and sold it at a substantial loss. I was out of my own truck for 3 months and bought a Pete with a Paccar engine. I like both the truck and the engine better in the Pete. I wish I could have got in I shift in it though! I'm back to old school having to shift gears and what not.

The Pete/KW automatic trans option (whatever they call it) was not considered or is that automatic not in the same performance class as the Volvo I-Shift?

We have them and I drove a couple of them with a D13. Engine is weak and if you feather the throttle the cab will rock on every shift.....I didn't like that at all. Felt like the truck needed shocks.

Gets great fuel mileage and if you push the fuel all the way down she scoots good. Shifter is mounted to seat.

Don't like it around RR tracks, don't trust it. Ours has an E/P button and a low button that don't work...dunno why not....

Our Volvos eat steer tires too, dunno why. Carrier DC, just puts new ones on. Driver was turning into a lease and ripped RF right off rim. ( strange )

Overall I liked it way better than an Allison 5 speed.....just don't like the Volvo....seems cheap to me.

The 2011 D13 was a poor model, quality wise. The engine was too new & buggy. My 2011 780 blew a head at 178k miles.

That said, I *love* I-Shift. It's excellent on fuel economy, and easy on the knees in traffic. You can still shift manually for hills, too. My favorite part of the I-shift, however, was the way it'd kick itself out of gear when you were maintaining the set cruise speed until you reached 3 mph over (or needed acceleration again), which had me rolling at 600 rpm. No safety issues though, because the second the brakes or accelerator is touched, the transmission is engaged.

I had forgotten about the way they tend to go through steer tires and sounds like that's still an issue. I also don't care for the "European" styling, especially in the interior. But I do want a "wide body" more aerodynamic tractor as opposed to a "hood".

I went from an '07 780 with the '06 530 ISX and 13 spd, 3.55 on 24.5LP to a '14 780 with the D13, I shift 2.64 direct and 22.5 LP. The new one is turning about 50 rpm less at speed. The I shift is wonderful in stop and go traffic, takes some getting use to how it skip shifts, especially when pulling out into intersections, but yes you can still manually shift it. I'm guessing fuel mpg will be up a couple tenths, but I only have 16K on the new one.
The old one had air front axle, the new is regular spring. If you have air front ride, the secret to tire wear is to be sure that the front air ride height is properly set, otherwise alignments by less experienced folks is a waste of money, and you will still wear tires. With either axle load range H tires are the way to get long wear, with as heavy as these trucks are on the steer axle.

The L is not LOW but for "limp mode" so if the transmission fails you can limp to the shoulder, etc.

You can get a manual transmission in a Volvo but that would be an option since they made the I-Shift standard. There are trucks on dealer lots with manuals that I see in the Truck Paper.

As far as how I like the I-Shift, there are things I like about it and others I don't like. After 60,000 miles still not sure if I would get one again.

I've looked at stock trucks (780's) all over the country. And out of probably 30 or 40 I've looked at, i've not yet seen one that had anything other then an I-Shift. The corporate sales people really did a number on the dealers and have their minds completely "made right" regarding the I-Shift. [You'll order the I-Shift or you'll wait 9 months if you get one at all]

I really have a problem with truck manufacturers telling carriers where the industry is going vs carriers telling the truck manufacturers where the industry is going. I guess the flood of never-ending greenhorn drivers is having real long-term affects on the industry at every level
