If the power supply side or the ground side is deficient then there will not be enough current to fully engage or operate the starter motor, if so, the symptom/issue you describe is common, if the starter motor is at fault, it can often exhibit the symptom as well. What I am trying to help you with is checking the circuit in order to find fault, or lack of, with the circuit servicing the starter motor. If no fault is found in the circuit then the starter motor is at fault barring a major mechanical issue which overcomes the ability of the starter motor.

In the case of a weak circuit- poor ground or power supply- the voltage will drop below what is required of the starter to fully engage when the circuit is energized due to resistance preventing adequate current.

What Philip is trying to convey, once one gets beyond his hubris, is a method to check for fault with the starter motor assuming the circuit is in good working order, then and amp test will indicate a faulty or properly functioning starter motor. An amp test cannot be conducted properly without a properly functioning circuit. So, it is your choice, do a test with a DVOM which you may already have and test the circuit, or go purchase an amp clamp and test the starter motor under the assumption that the circuit is in proper working order.

    ThreeM Thanks this.

    Alaska,

I am not here to debate/argue, nor do I make assumptions about you nor the circuit in issue...

You are incorrect with regards the integrity/testing method (mine) of the circuit.

However, I see the OP is in good hands....

Sorry guys I'm new to this page and don't exactly know how everything works but I am trying to get some ideas on a starter issue I'm having 05 9900 International Cummins ISX. So when I go to start the truck it fires up fine but the starter continues to turn so I turn the key off and the starter continues to turn only way I can get it to stop is by putting it in gear and dumping the clutch and cycling the key a couple times it eventually stops I have had this problem on this truck for several years it's very intermittent but recently it's been doing it more it also has hey thermostatically controlled switch that prevents you from cranking it too long but I don't really think that it works correctly if anybody could please give me some ideas that would be great I'm not sure if it's a starter issue or a ECM issue and once again sorry if I posted in the wrong place but I can't figure out where to post this at

sounds to me like you have a solenoid that is sticking on intermittently.

I have a Volvo Vnl d16 and I don't know where the crankshaft portion sensor is located. Does anyone know where it is located?
