Got two FOBs from Volvo with programming instructions. It seems it requires one FOB that already works to program another one. Volvo dealer says I have to get a new $1500 receiver/controller for the FOB to work if I don't have a working FOB.

Emailed Volvo corporate and explained my situation. They said " get a new dealer " :smt072

So - how do you program the FOBs w/o a working FOB...... I know this can be done without buying a new $1500 receiver.

    thanks

If you can get by a locksmith, they have a computer they can hook to it and reprogram it. May cost you about a hundred bucks but that's better than $1500.00

If you have a working FOB, this is how to program more FOBs

I have not found a locksmith with software to hack into this thing yet.

1Turn the ignition key to the drive position and then off again 4 times. Stop on the fifth movement in the ON position.Note: This step should be completed within a 15 second time frame.2The direction indicator lamps remain on and the system is now ready to be programmed.Note: The instrument cluster does not indicate programming mode.3Press button 1 or 2 on the original remote control.Note: It is recommended that at least one remote control to be secured at all times, to avoid the replacement of themodule-remote control pair, if both original remote controls are missing.Note: This step is a security feature.4The direction indicator lamps turn off for approx. 1 second to indicate that the module has recognized the originalremote control.Note: No reprogramming is possible without an original remote control.5Press button 1 or 2 on each remote control that is desired to be programmed.6
The direction indicator lamps go out for approx. 1 second to indicate that the new remote control has been added.

To program the next remote control repeat Step 5. The system will exit programming status after 15 seconds if noadditional remote controls are programmed. This is also the maximum time between activating the remote controlwithin the programming cycle. The system will also exit after eight remote controls are programmed.8When the remote control returns to the 'Normal' mode, If no buttons are pressed, then the last remote controlprogrammed, remains current for the system.Note: Due to the security feature, all desired remote controls to be programmed must be programmed, before theprogramming mode is exited into the Normal mode. To add a new remote control and keep the previous ones, all stepsmust be taken again having all the controls ready. The module starts each programming process anew.

Did that work? I bought both of mine off ebay. I didn't have anything but a key and took both to this locksmith up from the house and he programmed both of them. I don't know how he did it, I just know he used a computer. He said the program was very expensive so you might check with a big name locksmith in your area. Most smaller ones probably wont or cant spend the money he said the program costs? I think he said there was a certain number of times one could be programmed too before you have to change that part so that might be why they cant do it? He said I had 2 more times that I could program different ones in.

The Volvo process only works if you have one working remote. Turns out, the keyless entry control unit (Volvo P/N 21465357) comes in a kit with two remotes for $349. This controller is located under the fuse panel on the right side.... this is what it looks like

The control unit is provided to Volvo by some outfit in the UK called Cobra Vehical Security

I contacted them and they sent a set of instructions that has "if you have a working remote - do this" and " if you don't have a remote - do that".

I will try Cobra's instructions and see what happens

would also be interested in knowing if anyone was able to do this without an existing fob. my team just got some 2014 Volvos for work, and none of them have key fobs with them. and if you have been successful, where'd you get the replacement fobs?

    thanks

yeah, i feel like those instructions would definitely be useful for a lot of people. pretty sure I can get some used key fobs from somewhere other than the stealership if i just knew how to pair them up.

    thanks in advance.
