SCR DEF is better then DPF only.2012 was a good year for Volvo and their D13.Most bugs are worked out.Dyno, oil analysis,dealer service records is a must you already know that.Make sure DPF filter is cleaned.As far as the SCR they do get clogged from poor DEF quality or DEF filters not replaced on time.As you know the most important is how it was maintained and driven.Was it a large fleet truck or small fleet or o/o?Check the overall fuel consumption,engine hours,idling hours

I'm thinking of buying this truck 2012 Volvo 780 D13 425HP dual torque. Any opinion on it. It is string enough to pull in NC and WV hills?

No problem. If it isn't you can have it turned up. Mine is 455 Eco torque pulls better than my old c15.
