I was just wondering what I should know about one of these before taking a look at one for possible purchase. Any common problems I should be aware of or ask the mechanic to look out for specificly. It has around 450k miles on it. Anything i need to be looking at replacing in that mile range? Did these trucks have a bad reputation in that model year? Any help would be appreciated.

Your a student buying a truck? That in itself is a bad idea.
As far as what to look for, look for an extended warranty that covers the after treatment systems. Have the truck inspected by a Volvo dealer if you're not buying it from one, and get a printout of the warranty work done. Get a dyno and oil analysis done as well. Hah, No not a student. Just keep forgetting to update my profile. I was planning on getting it inspected, dynoed, and the oil tested. No idea why anyone would skip those. I was more looking for specifics about stuff like if the 2012s still had egr valve problems or if they managed to figure out that emissions crap by then. I see a lot of info about the 08s-2010s (mostly bad) but not much past that.

2012's are going to have DEF, so EGR will be the least of your worries.

Yea DEF is a pain. But I need to be able to run in California and I wouldn't wish the dpf only trucks everyone was crapping out after 07 on my worst enemy.

Ask when the DPF has been cleaned last, and get paperwork proving it.

DEF is actually no pain. Every 3rd fill I fill it. Tracked it for a while but is is les than .01 cpm. So I stopped. Avail at the pumps now so no jugs and crap. It's easy

Well the cost for the def itself isnt so bad. But if the thing goes haywire it can be pricy. Still better than having a dpf filter bootstrapped onto an engine that was never designed for it. Really don't have to many options on the def system. Too many good paying loads going into and out of the west coast for me to get a nice pre egr truck, and the California legal trucks pre def are a crap shoot so far as reliability goes.

I would agree, I had a 2011 Crapcadia DPF only, it was a nightmare. My Volvo is 2013 have had it almost 2 years and not a bolt on the drivetrain has been touched!! Now where did I put that piece of wood??......

Just hope that DPF never gets Clogged, most dealers just replace it 10 Grand. The part changer at the dealer now has to figure out what caused the clog filter in the first place, that will cost you another 3 to 5000. To figure that out.
