Or dude I'm on the road no multimeter. They carry all kinds of useful gadgets but not a tool. Puzzles me

It turns over but won't start, correct? It's usually that ECM wire. It corrodes and/or breaks off where it connects to the batteries. BUT, it could also be a fuel issue. Check your fuel filter and see if it is full of diesel. If it has fuel in it, then my money is on the ECM wire.

Lester I could say so many things to you but why waste time and effort to argue with you. If you don't have anything constructive your criticism is not needed at this point.

I will admit I didn't always tote the things I do. Usually starts out of needed it but it was at home so by the time I put it in the truck the need is gone. Why is it that after you start carrying something it becomes useless as the need never arises

Volvo is bad with ecm wiring problems , 2 weeks ago I replaced ecm and the wiring ,oil contamination; (wiring for 2nd time on this motor); very few shops have good technicians to find the problem ; they'll throw the whole harness . I never had this issues on my last truck ,Volvo 770 with Detroit D60 motor.

No multimeter.... How about a circuit light tester????

I think it has to be your ECM is not getting any power, but I can't think of a MacGuyer way around it for you. Yes, it could be the ECM board, but go with the simple first. Clean both ends real well and try reattaching it, for future reference, in today's trucks, a multi-meter is as important as many other tools. Where on 75 in KY are you? I run that a lot and may have a shop to recommend. Hey, if you're still stuck in the wee hours on Monday, I could stop by and take a look.

Yep it's the ECM wire. Low fluid levels will give you plenty of warning before shutdown. Even a fuel problem. I had a 2004 Volvo that shut down at 3 am. I woke my dispatcher up because I was worried about delivery. I told him what happened and he said it was either the fuel or the ECM wire that will shut one down like that. I looked at the ECM wire and it looked fine. As soon as I went to do a wiggle test the wire snapped off in my hand. The crimp had a fracture on it from repeated vibration. It looked good but I couldn't see the fracture under the insulator.
You mention the gauges not working. That's another sign it's the ECM not powering up. When you turn the key on the ECM will go through it's self test and display on the instrument panel.
So it has to be the connection, the wire broke, the inline fuse, the panel fuse or the ECM fried. Look at the little wire connected to the battery real close. Attempt to wiggle it. You might do all this with the key on so you can hear the dash come alive.
