I liked the new one I drove a while back. I used the manual switch, shifted most times at my choice. Check this: I drove a new 670 with the D-13 Volvo engine and the I-shift tranny. After a couple of months, I did 10K miles with the thing set on auto-shift, then another 10K with me and the manual shift configuration....I got 6.8mph on that rig, while the computer/autoshift did 6.3mpg on comparable driving conditions. I don't really like auto trannys, but I thought the I-shift was a good unit for all that it thought it could do better 'n me.

    Best automated transmission available anywhere.
There is nothing that comes close.
Durable , reliable and not temperamental like some of the others.
Seen them used at over 400 000lbs.

1 day in LA traffic convinced me the I-shift is better than manual. Oh, and mine gets 8.5mpg average if I keep it around 65 and dont hammer it.

It is a really good AMT. The only issue I have with any of them is sliding 5th wheel. It is truly and art form to learn how to slide a 5th with an AMT.

Fifth wheel trick. Drop the trailer, release the fifth wheel, hop on the rails and just grab the plate and move it. Saw a guy do that in the rail yard and he got it exactly where he needed it on the first try.

I am on day six of a 2012 vnl760 with Ishift 12 speed tranny. I run Chicago intermodal and have hit some stop and go traffic a few times. I am loving it so far.

When you are in slow traffic, idle speed, you can take your foot off the throttle and use the +/- gear buttons on the gear stalk to speed up or slow down.

I have not used full manual mode yet. But mine has economy mode and performance mode. Performance revs higher and hits most every gear. Economy shifts quite early.

When I am bobtailing it chooses to start in fourth gear.
