Why would Cruise control work only when it wants?

it is designed not to work if it thinks your tired, so you don't fall asleep when driving. safety designed. :biggrin_25523:

not really!. :biggrin_2559: but on my Detroit mine did the same thing years ago, I forgot what fixed it, I know it was a sensor located behind the dash, seemed to think it was some kind of vacuum & or electric type sensor. I remember putting a toggle switch on mine bypassing the factory switch to get it to work. sorry I cannot be more helpful.

It is a company truck so that "might" not be an option. Hehehee

I would really hate to deal with the hassle of putting it in the shop for such a small issue. Only to find the dealer can do nothing to diagnose/resolve the problem. Been there, done that too many times with dealers.

Try a start up cte some volvo use it to engage cruise and engine brake. Turn on ignition make sure have full air press brake pedal hold for bout 30 seconds or so then start truck also how is the engine brake working on the truck . When u lift up brake pedal should hear small click from bottom possibly one of switches is bad either brake per or handle switch for cruise

Today the cruise did not work initially. After several off/on cycles the cruise decided to work. So I never shut the truck off till I was home parked. The cruise worked the entire time.

The engine brake is working well in all 4 modes.

Try to press brake pedal for 4 seconds after engine start, it will enable cruise control.

The next day I tried it and it worked, so I did not shut the truck off the whole day. It was a long drive day for me compared to my usual local work.

This morning it did not work, but I only did a light press. At my first stop I cycled the ignition when checking into shipping and tried again with a half press. It worked!

So I did not shut the truck off again! hehehe

But checking into the rail yard at the end of today's work it is required to shut off the truck. When I dropped the trailer I did the full startup routine and had cruise for the ride home! But it was stop and go traffic all the way...

    I have hope though! Thanks!

I had a similar problem with my Volvo.
Try steering tilt with cruise on. If it disengages then its a bad cruse wire in the steering column or near the cruse control lever.
