I was able to work on the truck some yesterday- load tested the batteries- all checked GOOD and same with charging system. :biggrin_25519:

    2000 n14 & 1gen auto shift 10 speed.

I connected the handheld scanner to the diagnostic connectors 6 pin and then 9 pin ( I did NOT get trans codes from the 6 pin)

    so here they are..

130 191 11 PID Trans output shaft speed failure -- my guess the output speed sensor is bad/ having issues.?
130 056 11 AUX range mechanism system failure-- Probably from code above.

130 231 11 SID-- J1939 Data link failure?? Have NO idea... HELP!!:biggrin_2556: How do you test the data link? can it be tested? or Only replaced? I do know it is the 3 pin triangle shaped wire connector on the truck...

    136 231 9 SID J1939 Data link abnormal update rate??? HELP!!>>> NO CLUE:biggrin_2556:

136 012 5 SID ABS power unit pressure modulator valve/ ABS axle 3 right below value? sensor? I also have 3 other ABS codes for sensors on #2 and 3 axles. so that explains the ABS lights etc. however brakes function with the pedal pressed then turn key to on- the ABS cycles each brake drum. so don't know...

these codes seem to have noting in relation to the codes I got from the flashing service light on the shifter...the other day...

Called Volvo STEALERSHIP- got the typical "bring it in and we can test it for you and troubleshoot it" wouldn't offer any help to the codes, or what to look for etc.

Does your scanner tell you if the codes are active/inactive? Also does it give you engine hours so you can see how old they are? Some of them might be old codes that just haven't been cleared. The first thing I do on any Volvo with electrical issues is clean and check all battery and starter connections. Volvo's are very picky on voltages, poor battert connections make all kinds of weird issues.

The speed sensor could be a bad sensor or a wiring issue. Fix that first, the second code could be from the trans not seeing the vehice speed to know what gear it's in.

I would not worry about the data link one just yet. Get everything else fixed and see if it comes back. Update rate is usually from a ECU expecting a message at a certian time and not getting it, or getting a message when it's not expected. Generally not an issue with the data link itself, but it is a communication problem. Often these are just glitches that can be solved by turning the key off and back on.

I don't have much experience with Volvo wiring, but I do remember a lot of ABS issues stemming from a plug along the frame under or just behind the sleeper. Check for corrosion at all the connections. Clear the codes and see what comes back to eliminate any old codes.

The scanner does tell me active and inactive, and how many counts. It don't give me engine hours. or how old the codes are. I do know the ABS light was on when I bought the truck. but I did the "test" to make sure they functioned before purchase- figuring its probley a wheel sensor.
Counts on the the ABS code- 121 times.
the 136 codes were 5x each. (about the same amount of times I started/ stopped the truck when issues came up). If I recall correctly the data link failure 130 code was 15 times. active.

Thanks for the help. I will check that connector/ABS connectors and sensors next. I will order a new speed sensor today after I get a part number (hopefully) from VOLVO.
All the battery connections are very clean and tight, and I have went thru and checked the starter/ starter solenoid, engine harness connectors and about any other chassis connector I could find for issues/ corrosion etc, I sprayed each with electronics cleaner and then applied a very little amount of die electric grease on each connector.. (NOT THE BATTERY TERMINALS). I guess the next item if this don't fix it. is start pulling the wiring harness each section at a time, and check them for broken wires/ chaffing, grounding/ continuity etc. I have Not checked inside the cab/ under the dash for wiring issues yet.- But I did check for blown fuses. none found BUT the ECM fuse just behind the engine? key on (not started the fuse is fine) start the truck and fuse blows.- however the truck runs fine.

If you have a scan gauge connected to the truck it can cause the false code of datalink failure when the key cycles same with the update rate. If you have one I would ignore both those codes.

I asked my volvo guy about the j1939 issue and he said the first place they look is the batt box. Look for bad grounds and corrosion there, the firewall and all othe grounding locations. When asked why the batts first he said that's where all j1939 power comes from

Got 'er fixed. :biggrin_25520:... went with the 130 191 11 PID Trans output shaft speed failure code. ordered a new sensor, $35 and replaced it. Now the truck runs and shifts fine. actually better than when I bought it. Took about 45 minutes to change out the sensor, clean the electrical connector, and put electrical grease on terminal ends.

Tested the abs sensors on the rear axles at the connectors on the chassis- 2 of them are grounded out- the others read within specs, the sensors also varied on OHM readings while turning the hub- to indicate they work. so I ordered 2 new sensors for the rear axles, and should have that fixed in a few days.....

The Battery light on the dash is still on after I installed that "diode resistor wire" ... so Not sure on that one yet....

Thanks for the tips on the Data link,, I will trace those wires down and check the connectors at the battery box also...

The help is MUCH appreciated... THANKS GUYS!!!!!:biggrin_25514:
