Here's a report on a K&N v paper. Yes you trade filteration capabilities for greater air flow. think I'll stay with the Donaldson paper one.

Haven't looked up the specs, but how many microns down does each filter hold when new?

They have done studies in filtration capabilities vs paper. Yes it is true they filter better with age. Whether or not the particle size that can slip past an oiled gauze filter that would otherwise be caught by a dry paper filter would harm your engine over time is hard to say. You may or may not see a boost in power and fuel economy over paper...depends on how well designed the stock air intake system is to begin with. Some are quite restrictive and others are pretty decent.

The other thing to note with the K&N, is that it is a none oil filter. after cleaning you don't re-oil the filter.
double yellow and flood Thank this. -
Im using the K&N with my D16 and am happy with it. On its own I noticed minimal performance gains (slightly better throttle response) but certainly worth it as I would replace stock filter every 6 months. No oil and easy to blow out in between thorough cleanings which is nice. I had some ram air intake ducts made up and put a turbo bag on and the 3 work great together yielding avg 5 psi boost increase and 10L a day saved fuel (dedicated heavy haul)
