I agree 99-03 best trucks. I have 2001 D12 465. This engine was rebuilt at 1.6million miles, still driving same truck. No egr and dpf crap.

what makes the 99+ better than the 98 and earlier models? They are the same aren't they?

    as a company driver i had 2005,2006,2007 & 2008 vnl 780's all new..........
all were good BUT the 2008 was a lemon (1st year DPF) in 200k miles 3 sets if injectors, 4 turbo's, HEAD, cam, egr cooler, 3 egr valves, 5 sets of injector cups other repairs had us in the dealer EVERY 3-4 weeks... company had 1,200 2008 volvos and it was the same for ALL OF THEM.... that is the reason they never got any more...
when we were thinking about getting our own truck we knew it would be a volvo just not a 2008 of newer we don't do CA. so DEF & DPF is not needed (or wanted)
i have a 2006 vnl 780 with a D12, got it used with 500k it now has 975k big repairs as in over $2,500 i have had in the last 3 years, egr cool/valves, turbo....

You're right. I got curious and did some truckpaper searching myself. "1G" VNLs 1998-2003.5 and "2G" 2003.5-current. 3rd generation has to be along at some point soon I would imagine.

Everything prior to 98 are those White/Volvo/GM dinosaurs that are impossible to get parts for.

Was it a Volvo powerplant in the 2008 or a Cummins? I know that probably would qualify for lemon law were it a car. Not sure if those laws apply to heavy duty trucks. (would probably bankrupt the engine and truck mfgs if it did :)
