Oil coolers you say....
-
Dude if those are the old coolers yours were soooo much cleaner than mine. I had so much sludge! I flushed the system at least 20 times (probably more: cascade, simple green, and dawn) no joke. I would have replaced the hoses, but I had just replaced them all the month prior. I took them all off, and gave them a thorough cleaning. The cleanup was way harder than taking everything apart and putting it back together. I check my resorvoir every time I stop now out of paranoia. The day I saw the sludge I was devastated. I had added coolant 3 or 4 days prior and it was clean. When my oil cooler blew it went quick. The crazy thing is that the radiator shop that checked it said there were no leaks! The white blow by I was experiencing was coolant in the oil. It wasn't much as when I drained the pan, there was no visible trace of coolant. However, once I replaced the cooler the white smoke slowly went away. When I scrape inside the blow by tube I no longer pull out sludge..hell there wasn't even any oil residue in there today.

I had to do the job twice. Just redid it on saturday.. guess I over torqued the bolts the first time .. took 2 gallons of oil out of the expansion tank

How exactly did you flush the system?
-
It was a pain in the arse! I tried everything! The simple green was the most effective. I filled with well water and added 2 bottles of simple green. Other flushes included: half box of cascade. I shook it up with water in jugs, and poured it in. I did this several times...3 boxes of cascade. Then I flushed with dawn. 1 full bottle straight in the top after I added the water. The dawn flush looked like it removed rust rather than oil...it was a brown rusty look. After the dawn you will have to flush with water like 3 more times to get it all out. You have to idle high for 60 - 90 minutes for each flush or drive around until the engine temp reaches 180...then let it run a while.

I also mixed the cascade and simple green for 2 flushes

That was my plan and you just reinforced it.
I want to try purple power but I'm afraid it'll damage the rubber gaskets -
I thought about purple power, but couldn't find where anyone had used it in radiators so I decided against it. Know this...No matter how many times you flush you will never get the top of the bottom tank of the radiator completely clean...if you remove the bottom hose you will see what I'm talking about...why, I do not know but it would not come all the way clean. I don't think it's much though, as nothing has showed up in my overflow yet. I was expecting the little amount to dislodge. Maybe my filter caught it...or maybe it's there forever
CSL514 Thanks this. -
I am not sure if purple power will damages the radiator but I know for sure it breaks some types of plastic. Btw It would have been great to be there with you guys while all this went down, live and learn people.
UTURNZ Thanks this.
