The 2012 VNL780 im assigned to is programmed not to idle between 32 and 70 degrees Fahrenheit. It is currently 12 degrees with a minus 25 wind chill where I am. The truck keeps shutting off with the temp display on the dash showing 43 degrees. The shop of course, has "fixed" this issue before. I've tried leaving it shut off for an hour but the temp quickly "heats up" to a point it won't idle and shuts off. Any suggestions or idea what this could be so I can point it out to the shop?

Can you find where the temp sensor is? If there are 2 wires going to it try disconnecting them. If that doesn't do something try connecting them together. It's just a temp sensor and won't hurt anything trying that.

I had/have that issue with my Columbia... If it helps give you an idea of where to look I was told that the temp sensor is often placed between the wheels.

You sound like you're unlucky like me and the sensor is placed between your steers.

Theres ways to "fool" the sensor I'm sure, but I don't know of any that wouldn't melt as the engine warmed.

If I were you, take a picture and call your company. I would be on the phone raising cain. Good luck!

all else fails, can't you just not set your brakes(truck only)?

That may not work. I sat in stand still traffic on the interstate and the anti-idle kicked in. Still in gear, brakes released.

It may still be worth a shot. Only other alternative I can think of is weigh down the accelerator so it looks like you're doing something.

Unlatch the hood and prop it up a few inches, this will override the idle-shut off.

My columbia had something of a similar solution... But I'd have to move it about a mile, shut it off, cool it and then move it again. Long as I didn't shut it off it'd idle.

...makes sense. Gonna have to try that.

So, you cant just gas it up to 7 or 8 hundred and set the cruise control to keep it running?

Setting the brake won't work, anti idle kicks in even in d!I'll try propping the hood open a few inches. Thank you for the input and advice!
