I have a 2009 D13 and I am wondering if anyone knows at cruising speed what the difference in temperature is for the oil and water. I am having an issue and I am starting with this to see if my oil cooler is plugged. If the truck is running between 170 - 180 degrees the oil temp is around 210. I am trying to eliminate the oil cooler and egr cooler as problems or maybe they are problems. I get a lot of codes for egr to hot if I pull hard and really work it hard and water pushes out of the over flow.

also does anyone know how to change the antifreeze filter? I am sure this sounds confusing but maybe someone will find it familiar.

    THANKS

That's about right on the oil and water temp. I have a d12 so I don't really know but I was getting high egr temps a while back and it was because the turbo was messed up. If the engine doesn't get enough boost then the fuel burns hotter. I do know that the turbo on a d13 is water cooled so both issues may have something to do with that. It might be possible for your coolant and boost to mix right there causing the coolant to pressurize and not send enough air in for combustion. Of course, this is just a wild guess.

I have thought that too. Its really getting complicated with this. My boost is around 40. I had a trace of antifreeze in the oil last oil change and high amount of aluminum. Volvo said there isn't enough in the sample to look really hard. If I pull hard and really work the truck and make the fan kick on water pushes out of the tank. It gets a lot of air in the antifreeze tank. Volvo said its not exhaust. They claim they checked the egr cooler and said its fine. To many things on this engine have the air, oil and water so close to each other. I know a few guys lately with other engines getting rebuilds and I am scared to catch that bug. Guessing and checking are to expensive to try.

    Could be a head gasket.

I hear ya on the rebuild, just got mine back Friday with a fresh inframe and new head! Not fun.

If if its not exhaust then it could be air compressor. I don't know what working the engine hard would have to do with that though. Inj cups would put combustion in the water. Same with egr cooler. Cross contamination in the oil cooler I would expect to see oil in the water as well. The only other thing I can think if is a cracked head gasket or head but it seems both of those would show combustion gases in the water. How did volvo determine it wasn't exhaust in the water?

Very possible injector cups of never done before, what temp does the truck run when the overflow is getting full is it possible maybe overheating

I would have the coolent tested for exashet fumes. What you just discribed sounds like a head gasket on the way out. Its a cheap test. Btw volvo will tell you its a egr cooler or something else, they seem in denial lately about head gaskets.

I don't know what method Volvo did but they said there isn't any air or gases in the antifreeze. I told them it has to be running hard not idling. The fan kicks on around 210. The other day the truck said critically low coolant so I stop and look and its not very low. I kind of think it was passing a large air bubble and didn't have water around the sensor for a little. But the level in the degas tank varies sometimes but it always hangs around the same level. But this Volvo shop I use I think are idiots anyway. when I took the truck in to see about this problem I also took it in for an oil leak. They replace a couple sensors with oil around them but and put on a NOx sensor without asking. I ended up fixing the leak myself because they are incompetent and I made them take the nox sensor off because I didn't ask for it. I asked what an oil leak had to do with a nox sensor.

I'm with Fajo on this. I think you have the start of a head gasket problem. There shouldn't even be a trace of antifreeze in your oil, they are two separate systems that should never come into contact with each other. Head gaskets can start with just a very small pin hole leak and gradually get worse. I'd keep a very careful eye on the coolant level in the resevoir, If the level drops and it ain't on the ground it's in your motor.
