Hi DWH, starters are always a high wear item. Are they rebuilt or new? I don't trust rebuilders anymore, they do shoddy work. The only thing I can think of if the starter sticks, is the solenoid or most likely the key or starter button. Any wires going to the starter rubbed through and touching?

May be missing shims or spacer plate,if starter isn't aligned and at proper depth it will hang up. Not familiar with Volvo,I have a cummins,it has a spacer plate that looks like its part of the starter, but you have to tap it off and apply to new starter.

Had a Volvo about the year with a Cummins around here. It had a small starter control relay plugged into the wiring harness around the starter, flywheel, firewall area. It would stick and keep starter engaged. Found after burned up starter was replaced. Did it again with the replaced solenoid about a year later. Changed to to an old style relay with threaded studs mounted on firewall. A spacer plate left off locks engine down.

check starter actuation relay. It may stuck too.
