I have a 2003 volvo vnl 770 with a cummins isx 450st2 non egr. Im going to rebuild it since its been sitting for a while.. dont know much about it. I got the truck with the engine aside. My question is...what is recommended to be done to it before use? I got a pistonless rebuild kit, now do i need to have the crankshaft turned before i install the mains and bearings?? Should i replace the sleeves? What should i do before installing it in my truck?

What exactly is a pistonless rebuild kit? A typical rebuild kit consists of 6 individually boxed piston kits. A head gasket, oil pan gasket, intake and exhaust manifold gaskets. Without the pistons, all you have is some gaskets.

Are you sure you don't have a lower bearing kit?

As for the crank, unless it's scored up so bad a bit of five emery cloth can't smooth it out, there is no need to pull that crank.

Be sure not to remove, or even loosen one being cap at a time or the crank will twist, if that happens, you have to pull it.

Based on your question, it appears you are in way over your head here so take the time to double and triple check your work as you do it.

Ive rebuild dozens of engines, this is just my first diesel engine. So i know sum things are different, as far as the kit goes, thats what it is a pistonless kit...in other words sleeves, gaskets, mains bearings, o rings and some other thing...basicly enverthing in a regular kit without yhe pistons themselves

And Cummins sold this to you? I can not fathom investing that much time and money into an engine and not changing pistons. In your first post you ask about sleeves, can you think of a single reason why you would NOT change them? You got new ones right there,l.

I think I would save up the other 1400 because it is going to cost u in the long run doing a halfass rebuild. Just my .02

Wait a minute. You bought a truck, with the engine out of it needing rebuilt, and you can't afford new pistons? If 1400 it's the deal breaker, you need to really consider cutting your losses now. When talking big trucks that's practically pocket change.

Sometimes they take motor out when eng. needs crankshaft reground, dont give out any $ up/frount because you may need more than you know, what can you find out about why they removed motor from truck?
