I havent tried to start the truck for a few weeks. I went to start it and it wont crank. Batteries are fully charged. I also cleaned and tigtened the terminals. Not sure where to go from here. What should I check next? I have digital volt meter. Just don know where to check.

Lots of relays clicking. But dont know if its getting power to the solenoid, or where to check for voltage.

So what you are saying, have tools but dont know how to use them....

    Set adjustment knob/dial to 20vdc
Red end to Battery pos (+), Black to ground/frame (-)..
If you see 12vdc you are good up to that point, move forward...

Do you hear just the relays click, or can you distinguish a clicking come from the starter as well?
Always double check your batteries, check them individually of course. My next step is to see if the starter is getting power. You'll have main power and ground cables going to the starter. Make sure these are nice and tight as well. Attached to the starter you'll also have a smaller solenoid that will have a smaller wire coming off and away from any other posts on the starter. This is your stinger wire. Check to make sure the wire is good and tight. After that check for voltage. With either a dvom or test light, put one probe on the starter end of the stinger wire and the other probe to a good ground. Make sure you're in a safe position away from any moving parts. Have someone make sure. The truck is in neutral and turn the key over to the start position. You should see power at the stinger wire. If you don't your issue is on the electrical side. Check the stinger wire, ignition switch, and relays/fuses. On the flip side you do have a strong power source at the stinger once the key is turned. Your issue is with the starter. Either a failed or binding starter. You can use the whack it with a hammer trick, try turning the flywheel with a screw driver from the inspection hole, or hook up a remote starter button to test the starter.

Hi,on a D-12 2004 if you look at the firewall on LH side outside of the cab just below the steering shaft you will the starter relay bolted on a little braket, the coil of that relay (one small stud) is energized by your key switch at position start the other small stud is ground on the main ground stud of the starter.

For a quick test (first make sure your transmission is in neutral position) by pass the two BIG post of that relay with a jumper or two screw drivers . . .
    Let me know.

D12 Volvo uses modules for everything
Turn key to on position open hood and locate the starter selonoid
It will be located on the firewall under the air intake behind the steering
Link bar use a screwdriver to contact the two contacts in the center be
Mindful of spark and it should crank and reset the module then
Run for 5 minutes and turn key off and the next crank will work off the
Key. If this fails locate the 60 amp buss bar strips on the passenger side
Of firewall to see if they r loose burned or broken
This is providing that u have power to system as described above

Thanks for the reply. But I actually do know how to use the dvom. I just dont know where the components are located that I need to check, and which terminals. I will study the replies from the other guys and see if I can figure it out. Thanks again.

I figured out the problem. After locating the starter solenoid on the firewall, I did the old screwdriver across the big terminals trick. The engine cranked. Then I tested for continuity to ground on the one small terminal. Ground was good. I then tested the other small terminal for voltage in key start position. Voltage was good. Removed the solenoid and jumpered the two small terminals with a known-good battery(no click). Ohm tested across the two small terminals(open circuit). Off to Volvo tomorrow for a new solenoid. Thanks so much to everyone for your replies.
