Been doing some more brain storming on my entrepreneur ideas and I've also been thinking of trash pick up. My rural area does not have trash pick up, we have to haul our trash to the dump, it's a real pain in the arse for a lot of people and was thinking I might could capitalize on it. But me a small trash bin trailer for my f150, pick up everyone's trash and just go from there. I was thinking maybe $15 to pick up. Too small? Too large? Or does this sound like a dumb idea trying to compete with republic services?

There ya go,I think it sounds like a great idea. All the other ppl probably hate taking their trash to the dump every week also.I say go for it.How many homes are you talken? You could make a small fortune.I think $15.00 is a fair amount.

Define dump. Are you talking dumpsters and then Republic services comes and empties them or down south are you guys still throwing everything in a hole in the ground and it's open for everyone? I'd be cautious of going to a dumpster site and dropping it off there. You'd probably be classified as a for profit commercial business not just a homeowner. How far is the transfer station? You'd probably have to go there and then you'd pay a tipping fee based on weight. You may want to check into licensing for that as well. It's possible you'd have to be licensed to haul solid waste. Do some more checking into it. I wish you luck and I hope it works out for you.

I think we still throw our trash in a hole, the dump site is 2 miles from my house but I'm 99.9% sure I wouldn't be able to dump there, I'll have to find the land fill place and not sure how it works for solid waste but where I work we haul grey water and we have to have some letter from DEQ. As far as how many houses I'll pick up, not real sure since don't know how many people would be interested but I'd estimate 30 houses in my little area. Someone might already offer this I don't know but I've never heard of them if they do. Wish I could get a map that shows where republic services is covering. Where would be a good place to find out what licenses I would need?

Hey, don't worry about licenses and landfills. Just take it all to the Pilot/J and leave it in the back row of parking spaces. Apparently, the only thing you need is a CDL. Good luck in your new venture.

I wish I could find the link, there was a neat story written up about a lady here , I think in Waco Tx that started with a pick up truck , then she added a cheap Harbor Freight trailer but now has a full blown successful trash business.
Ill try to look it up for you.

I don't recall if this was the story I read, it was so long ago but this is along the same lines.
on a side note , when I drove a HD wrecker in Calif the Disposal acct always kept us busy, even when all the other accounts were slow, the manager said trash was recession proof and they did not really have slow seasons.
    Good luck

You may want to check with the state on being a transporter of solid waste. It sounds like you are more lax in regulations down there compared to WI. That's not surprising though. I don't think we have a landfill closer than about 100 miles. All of the smaller landfills here were closed and if you get caught just trying to bury it yourself you'd probably get hung. The garbage collection here spans the rural areas or there is a dumpster area where you take your trash to with set hours. Do you have recycling down there?
Good luck just do your research and make some calls to the state. Someone there should be able to point you to the solid waste division if LA has one.??

Thanks for the link to that story, I'll have to read it in a minute. Yes we do have a recycling center and there are 3 land fills in my area. Only bad thing, which maybe it isn't all that bad. I asked my mother in law, she lives on our street, if there was trash pick up around here and she said she thinks there's some sort of trash pick up. Said she used to see a guy a street down picking up trash but hasn't seen him in a while. Hope that doesn't smush my idea, cause this on has been the most promising I think. Just don't have a clue how to compete with huge companies like Republic Services. I guess I'd have to get business insurance and tax IDs, the whole 9 yards if I'd want to be legit. But I'll probably go door to door and see if there's any interest.
