Looking to get into the industry. I have 7 years of Class B experience and almost a year of Class A. I have an interview with Waste Management tomorrow for a Residential Driver position. The phone interviewer mentioned lots of physical work so I am assuming rear load. Fine by me whatever it takes! Any recommendations from those of you in the industry as how to maximize my interview's impact?
Thanks.

My dad used to drive a roll off truck for then about 14 years ago. He didn't mind the work, but said waste management is exactly like the stuff they haul...garbage

Seriously, you HAVE the job....you don't need to kiss butt....just be a regular guy.
Sounds like rear load as well....because if it was roll-off, they'd have asked if you know roll-off----because between front load, rear load, and roll-off....roll-off is the only one that requires more than just driving skills. Besides; the front load guys don't leave the job. The hardest part of front load is backing away from the can into traffic (in rear load you either curb the truck and dump residential cans, or back up to the 1, 3, 5, 7, yard dumpster and hook a cable...then you get to drive out instead of back out).
Roll-off, you have to back up to the can or compactor, and line the rails up, then hook the cable and pull it on as you level it off. Open tops need to be tarpped (but WM has the money, so 90% of their roll-off trucks have auto tarps) and make sure NOTHING is sticking out, or the landfill might fine you.
Roll-off and rear load are ALWAYS hiring in my area. -
Like I said, great benefits & great pay... & its a good basic company setup, but aside all that, its a terrible, terrible company administration.
Good luck .... -
I c WM hiring all the time. that right there outta say something.
I've applied a couple of times. never got a phone call though. -
Interview went well. I have a lot of competition and unfortunately WM lost the contract for the area they are hiring, so while they need drivers now they couldn't guarantee me work after May of next year. I will still take the job because I figure once I am in ANYWHERE in waste I can master the skill set and get on somewhere else if WM lays me off. It is actually side load and not rear so I am thrilled to learn the automation. Despite the fact that there is a lot of people competing for this job as long as no one has garbage experience I figure I should do well. I told him I'm ready to start and he complimented my enthusiasm and experience.

Worked for WM for four years, and only left because I moved out of state. They could not have treated me better and the only bad thing I have to say about the whole experience is that it was really hard work, but paid well enough to be worth it. Met several drivers over the years from different parts of the country who had similar experiences to mine.
Yet, I keep reading posts on here about what a terrible company they are to work for, so it seems like not everywhere is as great as where I was. -
dd, what part country you in? If a side loader and you never run one, keep a ck on the arm pads, and rpm while in motion because to much rpm will throw the cans and garbage all over, youll do a inspection every day when you come thru the garage line and writeup everything you find, leave nothing out, get on the good speaking terms with the shops supervisor and manager right off the bat on a first name, your supervisor if good will listen to suggestions if he feels will help his quotas, obey every traffic rule, wm has rules to cover rules and if thats not covering wm a new rule will be implemented pronto, new insurance coverage is very very good take full advantage of it for your family, stay off the cell if in motion, wear seat belt if sitting in truck period, drive cams need to always work, writeem up if not, they can and DO ck cams pointed at you make no mistake, may be weeks or months if they see something they dont like. Watch for dogs, people, cars backing out in front of you in that side loader, make sure you ALWAYS got plenty fuel. GOOD LUCK hope you get it.
