    Hi guys,
Had kind of a crappy day at work today (some days are better then others), maybe it's just the holidays and new years and it is all coming to a head. Things probably should slow down after new year, but as you all know I drive a beer truck and it's only ever been a job that I am luke warm for. There are some things I like about it and somethings about it I really do not like at all. It's not so much the physical part of the job, that I can live with, it's the money collection and grocery stores I hate checking it mixed wine at grocery stores, I can't stand it, that is the bane of my existence and my patience for it is starting to wean.

I wake up early in the morning same time the garbage trucks roll out and get back to the yard somewhere between 3-5 O Clock. Sometimes on a good day I get back earlier and sometimes I get back later. Usually I get screwed over at a stop or to and that puts me behind. I am beginning to think that maybe beer hauling is not really my thing.

I don't mind working hard and I don't mind getting dirty, I'm usually filthy by the end of the day ha-ha! Garbage hauling has interested me and I kind of want to give it a shot, mainly the fact that it has no CODs is nice and there is nothing to check in and take inventory of it's just show up grab the trash and get going all sounds good to me! I know they have a lot of stops to make, but at the same time like in my business the stops can probably be fairly condensed I mean you can go to a strip mall and maybe have 10 dumpsters to empty at the same place.

That being said Republic Services/Allied Waste did not have anything open and Waste Management I haven't heard anything good about, but I do not know anything about this company called Rumpke Disposal and they had some front loader positions available and I think it might be worth a shot.

Front loaders would be pretty nice. Only thing you'd have to do is open a fence if the bins were behind it. Other than that, watch clearances and it looks like a cream of the crop job. Unless there's a car parked in front of a dumpster, or it's overflowing. Oh, weather counts also. Probably much less physical activity an dropping off brewskis anyway.

Beer is actually fairly tough and some companies like the one I work for are hard to work for because we have beer, wine, mixers, non alcoholic stuff and it gets really confusing for the customers and they cannot handle all the invoices and so on and so fourth because beer, wine, champagne, non alcoholic and mixers all need to be on different invoices and then policy changes and it's a huge mess is what it is, my patience for all that nonsense is starting to get thin.

I do not know if anyone knows anything about Rumpke or not, just want to get the scoop on them before I put in an application although I suppose it really doesn't matter, considering I have worked for companies that I would consider jokes what is another?

Rumpke used to be the majority share holder in the trash business around here. CSI, WM and a few smaller ones have taked some of that market place over the past twenty years. But around here, if it's trash you can bet it's going to a Rumpke land fill. The pay used to be good ( from what I have heard ) at Rumpke but as with most large companies that has changed.

The front end loader truck wouldn't be that bad of a gig. I remember watching one at a apartment complex after Christmas. The box was surrounded by trash that wouldn't fit. He pulled up, picked up, dumped out in the truck, set the box down got out of truck and threw the remainder trash on the ground in the box and then drove off.

I am am not a serious germaphobe but I cannot imagine throwing trash and touching anything. :puke:

What at happened with the city job Mike?

Rumpke drivers around here do pretty good, I know 2 drivers and 1 mechanic they have all been there 7+ years. They have all had bad days and less than stellar stories about customers/supervisors, but they all are still there. That says a lot to me, they agree that the roll-off driver job is the best job there, and if you can play softball on the company team you will excel beyond your wildest dreams. They take their softball VERY seriously, if anyone doubts that take a ride north on state route 128 from 275, Rumpke has built a multi-million dollar soft ball park that hosts tournaments every year.

I make to much money at my current job right now so I am to expensive for them. They did not want me to take a $20,000 a year pay cut at the start. Basically I am making $20,000 a year more then the city would pay me and even at there top grade I am almost right at it, so basically they wanted CDL A people, but do not want to pay the CDL A price. It wouldn't be a bad job if you are some kid and had a Class B CDL then they would probably hire you. However I'm only 26 so I am a kid, but it was pure economics I make to much money for them at my current job.

I was talking to some drivers at my work this morning I guess where I work a couple guys left to go work for the railroad, I don't know which one either Norfolk Southern or CSX. I know all the guys who have been around for a while have said every year they have made less and less where I work.

I personally do not see any long term future in it for my self. The man who does the front load dumpsters on my delivery route for Allied Waste said last year he made $75,000. Nobody where I work last year made $75,000 I can tell you that right now. I'm not looking to make that much he has the down town Cleveland Route and it is a hard route, which is why he gets paid good, but you know $50,000-$60,000 that is a nice start. No waiting for trucks to get loaded for 2 hours like today, and then running 18 stops. They took 2 stops off of me, first time they ever did that, which saved me 100 cases and sometime. I was able to get back to the shop a little after 5:00pm along with everyone else. This whole holiday season has been a lot of work for us at the beverage distributor and while it's been tolerable it has also been exhausting I haven't seen my regular truck and trailer in 2 months and I am ready for it all to be over. There are some pros to where I work, but also some cons. People though seem to come and go a lot quicker where I work.

Well that all sounds par for the course so it's almost like where I work now minus the late loading and CODs, umm that sounds a tad bit more tolerable.
