Well today, I was sitting around thinking about this new year and well I pulled the trigger and applied to work at Rumpke Consolidated Companies as a front load garbage truck driver. Will see what happens and if they hire me or not. Do not really know why they wouldn't considering they are willing to train people to get Class B CDLs.

Well I have a Class A with experience so it is worth a shot. Pay won't be any different then I make now actually might be more, but that's not my main motivation for wanting to leave my current job.

If I'm reading it right, you already have a class A license….and they require a class b(at least)…….

correct me someone…If you have a Class A…You can do class b work…..no training necessary.

Yes you are correct. But you will get training because those class b trucks have different turning radius. The op probably was referring more to the company helping non cdl holders get the class b cdl.

Yes that is correct the with a Class A you can drive any vehicle in any Class below Class A. However they will still train because you have to know how to work the equipment. Like I have a passenger bus endorsement, but if I wanted to work as a city transit bus driver it does not matter that I have semi truck experience and already have the proper CDL I would still have to do the city bus companies training.

Main motivation, tired of CODs and tired of mixed wine and in general not really into hauling beer. I don't really mind working hard, but having to count stuff in and fix those problems and other stuff like that getting tired of. Like to broaden my horizons a bit. Hauling garbage looks to pay the same if not more then what I make right now so why not. Plus there terminal is closer to where I live which is also a bonus. Plus I don't know garbage hauling has interested me a little more then delivering beer. Not that there is anything wrong with beer deliver some people love it believe it or not. I like that in garbage for the most part you drive up open the gate grab the can empty it put it back close the gate and move on to the next one no checking stuff in no calling customer service (most of the time) no picking up payment from customers.

They certainly for the most part not saying there are not any bumps or stumbling blocks in the road not saying that at all trust me I know anytime you run a route and have a lot of stops to make the probability for stupid delays can happen I am well aware, I live it every day, but it seems like they can move a little more freely.

Actually my job the big problem with it is the CODs if it wasn't for that I could probably save 1.5-2 hours a day. Plus where I really lose time is turning it all in at the end of the day once I am back at the yard sometimes that can be a major hassle. I try to be good with my paper work, but sometimes the computer miss reads stuff and errors happen on the companies end and what are you going to do? So figured it would be a different change get to do something different and learn a new skill.

Ya when I did food service it was never fun coming out if a store in the hood and having people outside who knows you just got a stash of cash. I'd be putting my dolly in the trailer waiting for somebody to hit me in the back of the head. Also when I delivered to grocery stores those wine guys always seemed to have problems with things being scanned. When I was looking for local work those garbage ad's interested me as well. Just wasn't sure how the money would look at the end of the week. Keep us updated if you do get the gig. Good luck

They paid cash at the time of service? That seems insanely messy and complicated. Why not send a bill and receive a check?

I get paid cash at the time of service and it can get messy and complicated I try to be good about it and I'm usually okay, but some guys go to cash out at the end of the day and they have all kinds of goofy invoices and palm errors and goofy adjustments trust me it's no fun.

That's my big problem wine not scanning warehouse miss picks, grocery store receivers who are lazy and don't know how to do there job and do not really understand what is going on. Had about enough of that. Here's what I know about garbage the man who does my route for Republic Services also does down town Cleveland, he has a pretty hard route hardest route in the company, but he is compensated very well for it, he told me last year he did over $70K

Heck you give me $50-60K a year and I'm good I don't expect to make $70K and not all there routes pay that high he has a difficult route and earns every penny of it. However my day is hard too and I'll never make that kind of dough where I work.
