    Hi all,

to my surprise I got invited to take a written test for a local city ,career opportunity as a sold waste equipment operator. If anyone on here works for a local municipality driving side loaders, front loaders, etc. Please share your experience if you've Got anything to share.

I'm excited since cities usually screen my application and say I'm not invited to take written tests for driving careers. I'll let you know how it all goes. Do you guys think the test should be similar to the dept. Of motor. Vehicle tests?

    thanks guys

    Mike2633 Thanks this.

I would think it's more along the lines a the civil servant test and probably has nothing to do with driving.

    Mike2633 Thanks this.

"Examination will test your ability in hue areas of safety driving, state safe driving practices, proper lifiting procedures and other general practices." I'm just concerned it may ask specific questions and totally catch me off guard, I'll see tomorrow how it goes.

Sounds like a mix of a driver's/operator's exam and an OSHA exam.... Most safe work and general work practice exams are based upon common sense stuff. Like lift with your legs, not your back, never use the top step of a ladder, 3 points of contact in and out of a truck, etc... Since it's an equipment operator's position it may well include heavy equipment based questions as well.

Okay, 50 questions. It had some specific questions such as how much maximum gross weight can a single front steering axle truck weigh? 10,000, 12,000, 13,000.

Next, how should you level a trash load with your hand. True or false?

what is the maximum height of a comm veh, not requiring permits? 12',13', or 14'? I found out its 14', I put 13'.

In the end, hopefully I did well enough if I dd I will be taking a behind the wheel performance test!!

Hey all, well I passed the written to my surprise since they only took the candidates with the highest scores. I guess I did well enough!

In addition, I just took the performance test which is the same as the dmv performance test. I didn't hit any cones and did a pre trip test. I'm hoping for the best, they choose their candidates by 50% performance test, 50% interview.
I felt good since the recruiter said a lot of candidates were no shows since the date and times of the test were set in stone.he also said I was the first driver that didn't hot any cones which is an automatic fail! I'll keep you all updated, it's gona be tough battle.

Very cool! I think you have a good shot at it! Our City used to do that same type of testing but not anymore. Just a good DMV and your CDL and its all about the interview from there. Of course some type of related experience helps, but its not a requirement. Keep us posted and good luck! :yes2557:

It's funny to say I was excited to hop in that autocar! It had air condition, electronic transmission and was pretty xxxx comfortable! I can only hope I did well enough to make it to the interview where I'll shine! Thanks gmanincali for the support.

I wanted to to ask when driving a side loader all day does your neck get tired from looking at the mirror all day?

Also so is it by experience when you know when to stop to set the arm out to collect the bins?

Yeah, you can see where you need to line up the cart in your spotter mirror with the arm gripper. Or sometimes the trucks have a camera mounted above the gripper and all you have to do is put the cart in the center of the monitor and your perfectly lined up to grip the cart. I had one positioned that way when I drove a ASL and it makes it really nice, no neck strain. Like anything, it takes a little practice and don't worry about your neck, it'll get used to it too..lol Sure beats humping cans into the back of a rear load truck...lol
