Are there any drivers on here based out of Missoula, or any other drivers in the know.

My wife and I have been thinking about moving to missoula and I plan on getting my CDL through "sage".
what kind of work do drivers out of missoula generally do, is it regional, otr, any shortline work, what is the hometime like with them as ive heard alot of people dont like getting a load heading there as there is never much loads going back out again.
I tried to contact roxy but keep getting her answering machine, but we are out the country for the next few months and cant leave her a return call number, hence the reason im asking all you guys for some information..

    thanks.

I used to be based out of Livingston. Here is the deal with Trucking out of Montana, outbound freight pays A. cheap, B. dirt cheap, and C. cheaper than dirt cheap. Mostly B & C.

So if you are getting paid by the mile, dont expect a lot of home time.

If you are getting paid on percentage, dont expect a lot of home time.

You will want to be running to make a deacent living.

Montana is a great place to live, lousy place to find freight out of.

    You talking to Watkins Shepherd?

The good news is the cost of living in Montana is way less than in Portland.

The question is are you going wind up buying your own truck eventually?

to be honest i hadnt really thought about buying my own truck eventually, i heard it used to be good but what with fuel costs and more and more being layed back on the driver, it can be safer to just run with a company?

but hey you never do know where the road will lead you i guess!

Right now, unless you are paying cash for it, not a good time to buy a truck.

The reason I ask though is Montana is a good place to live if you are an owner opperator, you can find a place to live there that has enough room to park your truck at your house and eventually put up a shop to work on it in. Saves you a ton of money in the long run.

The outbound freight aint all that great, in fact often it sucks, but the thing is, out of missoula, you can bounce to Seattle or Spokane for not a whole lot of money if nessacary, pick up something worth touching out of there and stay out on the road for a couple of weeks.

The good thing about Missoula, is you can overnight from there to Seattle, so many drivers who live in the area can get a load from somwhere back east going to Seattle or Portland, and get to stop through the house on the way by.

I know I did that quite a bit.

If you do move to montana I strongly sugjest that you look for a place where you will be able to park the truck. You will be glad you did.

I lived in Ravalli County for 8 years, which is just south of Missoula.

If you work for W/S you will get home. If you work for Jones Brothers in Missoula you will get home. There are a couple of refer companies in Billings Montana.

I worked for W/S for almost a year back in 05. If you live in Missoula they are great to work for.

If you work for anybody else that doesn't have loads going into Missoula, it is hard to be an OTR trucker there. It was always a struggle to get home time, because of the cheap freight. Companies don't want to send you there if they don't have good contracts to get you out.
