I recently graduated from Western Trucking School in Turlock, CA. I just passed my drivers test on 3/22/13. I have a pre-hire with Watkins and Shepard, and I'm going to be starting my orientation on either the 15th or 22nd of April. What does their orientation involve? Also if there is any useful information that anybody thinks will help me I would be grateful for it. I'm pretty confident in my driving skills, everything except my alley dock, that definitely needs some work, not afraid to admit it. But I'm good on everything else. Anyone currently working there that can give me the inside scoop?

You will have plenty of time to practice your backing in Missoula, make sure you take advantage of that time. Seems like every time I'm there, the new recruits don't practice at all, then when they are on their own they can't back at all.

    jbyron602 Thanks this.

I will take advantage of whatever time I can get. I wouldn't say i'm horrible, obviously since I passed my dmv test already. Just know I could do better. Don't wanna get out on the road and look like an idiot. But I think doing the alley-dock in a 48, or a 53 is way easier. Just wish I could have used a longer trailer when I was taking my test.

Don't be afraid to ask questions while your there. Rick and kelby will give you a hard time while your training but they do a good job training. Talk to drivers that are there in the lounge while your there and most will be glad to give advice. Get phone numbers if you can so when you get out on the road and you run into problems you have resources to fall back on.
And don't worry about being perfect right off the bat, it can take awhile for things to sink in. All of us started out similarly.

Take your time, when you rush things paint gets scraped and hoods come off haha.

Most important thing you need to focus on is matching revs climbing and going down mountains. I believe day 1 is just paperwork and some classroom, day 2 classroom, videos and backing around the yard, day 3 going out on the road, day 4 back on the road and you'll be making some turns in the streets(you'll be sent home if you run over any curb), day 5 you'll head for the mountains(you'll be sent home if you don't do well enough). If you make it through day 5, which should be Friday you're pretty much good to go. You can stay over the weekend or go back home. Mon, Tues the last two days are mostly classroom stuff, Wed you should have a truck assigned and have a load before the weekend. Good luck!
